    [B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS

[02] AVRUPA: ``Turkey decayed the TRNC'' The front page article of AVRUPA (26.12.00) under the banner headlines ``Poor

TRNC'' says that Turkey, within a period of 26 years, decayed the ``TRNC''.

The article continues: ``Within a period of 26 years North Cyprus has become an underdeveloped area under the occupation of Turkey. After coming under Turkey/s hegemony, our country has hit the level of the most undeveloped countries of the world. It is buried in darkness and for years now it cannot solve even the electricity problem.

    - The other night, due to power failure, we were not able to publish our newspaper `AVRUPA/. After midnight electricity was cut twice. When we were ready to do the last print, the machine stopped and we were buried in darkness.''

    The article then continues:

    - ``The Turkish Cypriots have become a minority in their own country! - The land, the properties which were left behind by the 200 thousand Greek Cypriot refugees were grabbed by those who did not have the right to be the owners.

    - The whole North Cyprus has been declared a military area.

    - The citrus fruit, which were the gold of our country, have been decayed. - Our tourist hotels have been handed over to Turkish capitals.

    - The Cypriot liras of the citizens in 1976 were usurped, in 2000 the money disappeared from the banks.

    - The famous mafia father of Turkey moved to North Cyprus. The country has become the paradise for drugs dealers and money-laundering.

    - While professions like the shoemakers, tailors and carpenters are being extinguished, the number of pimps is getting bigger and bigger. Brothels under the name of night clubs have been opened and women/s trade is being accelerated! - While our children were doing their military service, they were beaten. - Our youth, in order to be able to return to their own country, have to pay thousands of pounds sterling due to the military law.

    - We do not produce anything. We even started to import olives from Turkey! - The churches were looted, antique smugglers are wild with joy. - Our hospitals are decayed. We couldn/t even buy an MRI machine. - For 26 years now we haven/t been able to clean away the chemicals in Lefka.

    - And we have our own money, and our passports are valid! We have also become victims of the Turkish lira.

    - Turkey, which is a member of NATO, has filled our country with military bases. With the forbidden areas on our lands, our right of free movement is being limited. To convict us, they established a military court. In our country, they declared us traitors and spies.

    - In 26 years, everything has been decayed and it stinks.

    - We do not have electricity, water or any freedom! They want to hold as hostages for many years to come for the sake of their interests.

    - It/s enough!.''
