[01] Kofi Annan hopeful about Cyprus negotiations KIBRIS/s (20.12.00) New York correspondent Sema Emiroglu reports from the UN

During his annual press conference at the UN Headquarters in New York, Kofi Annan referred to the Cyprus problem as well.

Answering a question on Cyprus put to him by a Turkish journalist, especially on the recent decision taken by the pseudo-state/s assembly for withdrawing from the talks, Annan said: ``I have to say this. I have read the resolution adopted at the assembly. Of course, engaging in such negotiations is a long process and at this moment in time we are at an early stage of this process.

Mr. De Soto may go to the region in January and will have the chance to visit Istanbul, Athens and Nicosia.

I have informed the sides that I want to meet them again early in the new year and I hope my invitation will be accepted; my good offices are open, as I said. These statements (of the pseudo-assembly) are part of the process''.

[02] Denktas Meets British High Commissioner; Pyla Incidents Discussed Anatolia Agency (13:22 hours, 19.12.00) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader

Denktas and Clay discussed the latest developments on Cyprus issue as well as the recent incidents which broke out in Pyla village.

Denktas didn`t make a statement after the meeting.

Clay stated that the Greek Cypriot Panayiotis Cakurmas who was illegally arrested by the occupation regime was kidnapped in the area where the British bases were located, adding that this area is under his responsibility. Clay said he was concerned about Cakurmas.

When asked by a journalist ``yesterday, following your meeting with Clerides, you told Greek Cypriot reporters that the issue of Cakurmas who was arrested on charges of drug smuggling, had humanitarian and legal dimensions. Don`t you think that the issue of Omer Tekogul who was arrested by the Greek Cypriot police for keeping drugs also have humanitarian and legal dimensions?`` Clay said, ``Cakurmas was last seen in his car in Dikelya base. We have a responsibility for anyone who lives and visits this region. Therefore, I have a responsibility for this person.`` Clay added that his involvement in Omer`s case was different.

``Mr. Denktas knows my special concern on this matter,`` he added.

[03] Hasipoglu Says Sovereignty of British Bases Should Be Debated Anatolia Agency (15:36 hours, 19.12.00) reports that so-called

Noting that there are certain people who say ``there can`t be two sovereign nations on the island,`` Hasipoglu said that the British bases and the Cyprus republic were sovereign. ``The Turkish Cypriots were also partners in the Cyprus republic before they were excluded from the partnership'', Hasipoglu said, adding that the sovereignty was also divided when the Turkish Cypriots left the partnership. ``If there are two sovereign nations in Cyprus, there could also be three,`` he added.

``I think the British has no sovereignty rights in Cyprus. They have no citizens living here. Therefore, the sovereignty of the British bases should be debated. Especially after the incidents in Pyla, this issue should be dealt with more seriously,`` he commented.

[04] New plane for ``Turkish Cypriot Airlines'' KIBRIS (20.12.00) reports that the so-called Turkish Cypriot Airlines (KTHY)

KIBRIS notes that with the new plane, the so-called KTHY/s fleet will consist of nine passenger planes: three Boeings 737-800, four Boeings 727, and two Airbus.

The agreement to acquire the new plane will be signed in London today and the plane will be delivered on May 2001.
