    [A] NEWS ITEMS

[01] Denktash hopes Kofi Annan will not bring surprise document Addressing journalists prior to his meeting with Alvaro de Soto, the Special

Representative of United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan to Cyprus, within the framework of the fifth round of proximity talks in Geneva, Switzerland, Turkish Cypriot leader Denktash claimed, ``the Greek Cypriot side has made a unilateral application to the EU on behalf of Southern Cyprus. The Greek Cypriot side should give priority to solution of the Cyprus question instead of full membership to the EU. Only then the Turkish Cypriot`s status will become definite and then we can enter the EU as a single Cyprus. But the Greek Cypriots are insisting on saying, `we will solve the Cyprus question when we enter the EU/. It means denying United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan/s good will mission and the fact that we should enter the EU after solving the Cyprus question. The EU is a union, it cannot accept a divided country as a member''.

Anatolia Agency (14:19 hours, 7.11.00) reports that Denktash added: ``We welcome the attendance of United Nations Secretary General at the proximity talks from time to time. But we hope that he will not announce a surprise document. We do not want to encounter surprises'', he told reporters.

Referring to Cyprus Defense Minister Socratis Hasikos/ statements to the Greek Cypriot press, Denktash claimed, ``he does not have any information about what is happening in Geneva. He says, `Cypriot government will send 200 soldiers from Hellenic Army (as heard) for the European Security and Defense Identity. It also gives a base/. In fact, the proximity talks envisage annulment of the Hellenic Army (as heard)''.

Denktash added that he would come together with United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan on Wednesday.

[02] Jacques Poos: Key to open EU door for Turkey is in Cyprus According to TURKIYE (6.11.00), former Foreign Minister of Luxembourg and EP

Cyprus Rapporteur Jacques Poos said that Turkey/s key to open the EU door is in Cyprus. If Turkey says ``no'' to Cyprus/ membership then Turkey will be saying ``no'' to her own membership, Poos said.

Poos added the key that will open the door that closes the Ankara-Brussels road is in Cyprus.

Poos further said that his latest report an Cyprus reflects the reality. He stressed that Turkey/s invasion of Cyprus was a mistake. He also supported a federal solution with maximum autonomy to the sides.

Referring to the Helsinki decisions, Poos said that ``from now on Turkey belongs to the EU, and this shows the EU is not a Christians Club. ``The EU is not a Christians Club, I do not share this sort of criticism. It is a community of common values, of those who agree to respect these common values. Turkey could be a member if she agrees to abide by the Charter of European Fundamental Rights. Turkey cannot have special treatment compared to other candidates.''

[03] Who will succeed Serdar Denktash After the resignation of Democratic Party (DP) leader Serdar Denktash from

the post of party leader, there are various scenarios about who will be the next leader of DP.

KIBRIS (8.11.00) reports that so-called TRNC assembly deputy speaker Salih Cosar decided to run for the leadership of the party.
