[01] Turkish Assembly speaker pledges continued support for ``TRNC''

In a press briefing he held together with so-called assembly speaker Ertugrul Hasipoglu, Akbulut said: ``We will always be close to TRNC people and TRNC state.'' He claimed that the Cyprus issue can only be solved upon the basis of ``two separate peoples and two separate states''.

``Another solution method won/t be right and won/t respect the equity principle'', said Akbulut.

Akbulut then had a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

Addressing journalists prior to the meeting, Denktash said, ``the Turkish Cypriots have been experiencing difficulties since 1960s. Political parties at the Turkish Parliament, even the disputing ones, have always taken decisions unanimously on the issue of Cyprus. These developments are a source of pride and strength''.

Denktash noted that they would overcome recent economic difficulties in cooperation with Turkey.

Meanwhile, Akbulut said in his part, ``Turkey has always supported the TRNC and continue to do so in the future. The TRNC has recorded great progress under the successful leadership of President Denktash''.

Akbulut emphasized that the Turkish Cypriots should live freely in prosperity and sovereignty, and added that ``everyone should accept the fact that there were two separate nations and two separate states on the island''.

In the meantime, about 60 employees of the six offshore banks which were transferred to the ``state'', protested the pseudo-government during the ceremony held for Akbulut at the pseudo-assembly. The protesters chanted slogans ``Welcome to the bankrupt country!'', ``government resign!'' and ``we don/t want to immigrate''. They said they lost their jobs after the ``state'' took control of the banks and they were left without social security. The protesters accused the ``government'' for being inactive on this matter and demanded a solution.

Akbulut told the protesters that Turkey will help them bring a solution to their situation.

[02] Akbulut addresses pseudo-assembly; repeats claim for two separate states

``There are two separate states and two separate nations on the island today'', Akbulut claimed.

Akbulut further claimed that the solutions which turn a blind eye to this ``reality'', are destined to failure.

Akbulut alleged that the Turkish Cypriots has been the compromising side ``without losing the desire to live together with the Greek Cypriots despite the injustice it faced''.

Akbulut also claimed that the ``two state confederation formula'' which was developed by Rauf Denktash forms the necessary framework for the peace and envisages a lasting peace on the island.

Reminding his listeners that the Cyprus proximity talks continue, Akbulut said that ``TRNC should not withdraw from its independence and sovereignty in the name of peace.''

``The lack of confidence between the two nations on Cyprus, and the balance between Turkey and Greece should be taken into consideration'', Akbulut said and added claiming: ``The embargoes imposed on TRNC are unfair, and these embargoes should be lifted''.

So-called assembly speaker Ertugrul Hasipoglu said that ``regardless of the political solution found for the Cyprus question, it is our basic principle to make our people live in welfare and democracy in the geographical position, the freedom and sovereignty borders of which were determined''.

``Although the sovereignty rights of the British bases on the island are respected, the native nation of Cyprus right to sovereign its own life and future is considered as a luxury'', Hasipoglu claimed.

Akbulut later met with Mustafa Akinci, the ``acting prime minister'', Serdar Denktash, the leader of Democratic Party, and the officials of other political parties.

[03] Eroglu in hospital for possible infection, undergoes angiography

Professor Dervis Oral, head of the Ibni Sina Cardiology Department who had performed the angiocrardiography, pointed out that for a long time Eroglu has been complaining of an acid stomach caused by an infection in his respiratory track and oesophagus. Oral added that Eroglu came to Ankara to check whether this complaint had anything to do with his heart. Oral noted that as a precaution, a coronary angiography was performed on Eroglu yesterday morning and that now all his heart vessels are completely open. Oral said: ``Mr. Eroglu has been complaining for a long time about an acid stomach. Because such sensations are close to the hear, both he and I were concerned that he might have another heard attack. That is why we performed a coronary angiogaphy, to rule out any danger. At the moment he is in good health.''

Professor Oral said that Eroglu will be checked by other doctors too in connection with his complaints, adding that the complaints may be due to an allergy or caused by air conditioning. He added that if there is no need for an intervention following the check by other doctors, Eroglu will be released from hospital on 13 June.

Anatolia Agency (15:15 hours, 12.6.00) reports that Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit has called on so-called prime minister Dervis Eroglu at Ankara University/s Ibni Sina Hospital where Eroglu is being treated.

Ecevit was briefed on Eroglu/s health by his doctors. After visiting Eroglu for half an hour he replied to reporters questions.

In reply to a question, Ecevit said that there is nothing to be concerned about regarding Eroglu/s health, adding that he will return to Cyprus within a few days and assume his duties.

[04] Holger: Core issues at third of proximity talks

Holger yesterday visited the chairman of the Communal Liberation Party (CLP) Mustafa Akinci.

Speaking to reporters, James Holger said that at the third round of proximity talks to be resumed on 5 July in Geneva, core issues will be put on the negotiation table. ``UN Secretary General Kofi Annan/s and the Special Representative/s aim is to score progress'', Holger said.

[05] Symposium at EMU

The two-day symposium opened yesterday and will finish today.
