He further said that 2480 people were examined, 43 of which were found carrying echinococcus. He said that this corresponds to 1.73% of the population. He further said that in the occupied Nicosia area 30.3% of the sheep and 13.16% of the beef were carriers of echinococcus. In the occupied Famagusta area, the figures are 46.0% among beef and 71.1% among sheep. Dr. Inan strongly criticized the occupation officials for turning a blind eye to this very serious issue and said: "They are trying to use the press to run a show, alleging that it is not an important issue". Referring to misuse of UNOPS funds to fight against the disease, Dr Inan said that he heard that some of the officials used the UNOPS funds for other purposes. However, he said, he is not in a position to tell the real dimensions of the issue. Dr. Inan warned that the situation is very serious and urged to take urgent measures.
