[01] Eroglu briefed on economic package

According to KIBRIS (22.5.00) the so-called Prime Minister of the pseudostate Dervis Eroglu has claimed that the country has a stable ``government'', adding that the so-called National Unity Party NUP communal Liberation Party CLP coalition ``government'' is working with goodwill in a bid to overcome the problems.

Mustafa Akinci, so-called acting and deputy prime minister and state minister, economy and finance minister Mehmet Bayram; and Public Works and Transportation Minister Salih Miroglu visited Eroglu, who is recovering from a recent illness at the Jasmine Court Hotel in occupied Kyrenia and gave him detailed information on the final version of the economic package the so-called Cabinet prepared on 20 May.

In a statement to the media during the meeting, Eroglu said that they will hold a detailed discussion on the socio-economic package, adding that this country, might be faced with economic problems from time to time.

Noting that certain ``government'' scenarios have been mentioned recently, Eroglu said that this is the first time that the TRNC has had such a harmonious so-called coalition government and that creating a government crisis would not benefit anyone.

Pointing out that if all the sectors of the community are in solidarity then the problems can be overcome more easily, Eroglu said that a period in which the country can be in cooperation, unity and solidarity has begun, adding that if measures are not taken now more bitter measures might be necessary in the future.

[02] Talat faults `coalition/ for imposing package

According to KIBRIS (22.5.00) the leader of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) Mehmet Ali Talat has said that the so-called National Unity Party- Communal Liberation Party (UBP-TKP) coalition is trying to impose its economic package on the community and called on the ``government'' to change its stand.

In a written statement, RTP leader Mehmet Ali Talat maintained that the leaders of the two parties seem insistent on ignoring the principle of participation, one of the basic principles of democracy, and on doing whatever they please. Talat pointed out that the so-called government will merely brief the parties and organizations outside the NUP and the CLP since it is impossible to reach a consensus. He asked: ``How can a moral or de facto consensus be reached on a package drawn up without the input of other organizations?''

Talat asserted that social accords can only be reached moving from the grassroots up, and he cited the conciliation document drawn up when the `RTP was in power as an example. He pointed out that the approach of imposing policies and the omission of nongovernmental organizations at a time when Cyprus is getting ready to join the EU membership process and in the midst of a serious economic crisis can benefit neither the country nor the community. Such policies, he said, can only further the interests of those circles that want to usher in antidemcoratic regimes.

[03] GIAD on bank crisis, economy

According to KIBRIS (16.5.00) the Association of Young Businessmen (GIAD) has called for the introduction of urgent measures and structural reforms in order to preclude a bank crisis, to overcome the present economic problems, and to achieve progress.

In a four-page statement on the economic situation and the demands of the young businessmen, GIAD Chairman Vargin Varer has said that resources worth about $100 million have been transferred to Turkey through Is Bankasi and Ziraat Bankasi in the past few months.

The statement, a copy of which has been sent to the so-called State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mustafa Akinci, notes that the programme of the so-called coalition ``government'', which was set up with the overwhelming support of the people in the 1998 general ``elections'', contained measures for securing economic revival. However, the statement says, none of these measures were put to practice for a whole year.

[04] Turkey: Sezer presents Ataturk peace prize to Denktash

This year/s International Ataturk Peace Prize was given by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer to Rauf Denktash, Turkish Cypriot community leader.

Denktash arrived at the Cankaya mansion on 19 May.

Denktash said that the 1,000 gold coins will be used to buy equipment for two hospitals in the occupied area.

[05] Ecevit and Denktash discuss economic crisis in the occupied area

According to Ankara Anatolia English service, 13:25 GMT 19.5.00) Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit met on Friday with Rauf Denktash who came to Ankara to receive the Ataturk International Peace Award.

Following the 45-minute meeting at the Hilton Hotel in Ankara, Prime Minister Ecevit and Denktash held a press conference.

Prime Minister Ecevit said that the meeting had focused on economic difficulties in the occupied area.

He said, ``we did not need to discuss foreign relations and political problems of the TRNC at the meeting, because the attitudes of Turkey and the TRNC, and President Denktash/ determination are clear. A satisfactory solution cannot be found unless the existence of two separate and independent states on the island is recognized''.

[06] Project for eradicating contagious diseases

The front page of KIBRIS (20.5.00) under the title ``2,5 million dollars from UNOPS for contagious diseases'', refers to the campaign which has begun to eradicate contagious diseases.

The so-called director of the Veterinary department, of the ``forestry and agricultural ministry'' Kamil Aktolgali said that during the first stage of the campaign for the eradication of contagious diseases, 2,500,000 dollars were put aside for research by UNOPS (United Nations Office of Project Service) who finances this campaign.

Aktolgali explained that ``at this moment we do not have the money, but the money has been put aside for the work. Everything from A to Z has been covered by UNOPS.

[07] Eight thousand tourists expected from Alanya and Anamur

According to KIBRIS (20.5.00) regular sea services between Alanya (south Turkey) and occupied Kyrenia port started yesterday.

The paper says that 110 people arrived yesterday in the occupied area, by FERGUN EXPRESS II of Fergun Maritime Company.

KIBRIS adds that in June a new sea line will be opened between Anamur (south Turkey) and the occupied Kyrenia port, and together with Alanya- Kyrenia service, it is expected that eight thousand tourists will visit the occupied area from these two ports.
