    [01] DEMIREL VISITED THE PSEUDOSTATE

According to illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (1040 hours, 6/5/00), Turkish President Suleyman Demirel arrived in the occupied area last Saturday and in a statement at occupied Tymbou airport he called Denktash "a hero" and added:

"We have not yet arrived at the conclusion of the matter, but the TRNC is present and in existence. It is being governed by a democratic system. Both our Turkish Cypriot kinsmen and the TRNC are under the guarantee of the Turkish Republic. In other words, our Cypriot brothers here are not alone. Motherland Turkey has declared the Cyprus issue a national cause, and this is how the matter has been viewed all along.

I will hold talks with Mr. Denktash on the Cyprus problem. Later, I will attend certain activities. I will return to Turkey in the evening."

[02] DEMIREL ASKS WORLD TO RECOGNIZE PSEUDOSTATE

NTV (1240 hours, 6/5/00) reports that Turkish President Suleyman Demirel delivered a speech at the Ataturk square in the occupied part of Nicosia and, inter alia, said:

"In trying to resolve all the problems through peaceful means since its establishment, Turkey has encountered certain serious and disturbing incidents. The Cyprus question was placed on the agenda of the world in the late 1950/s. Since that day, it has been a subject of great sensitivity for Turkey. Whenever it concerns Cyprus, people of opposing views come together in Turkey. Cyprus is our dear life.

For the past 60 years, Turkey has pursued one unchanging policy in unity and solidarity despite the various governments and individuals that have come to power. This policy concerns Cyprus. What do we strive for in Cyprus? We strive for the security of our brothers in Cyprus. I do not think this is too much to ask. We want you to be comfortable here. We want you to be satisfied."

Demirel claimed: "If there is tranquillity, quiet, and peace on the island today, it is not the work of the United Nations, but the work of the brave Turkish army. Do not have any doubts. The Turkish state is strong. It is powerful enough to protect your safety, your property, and the TRNC.

Who doesn/t want lasting peace? This is an island in the eastern Mediterranean. It is called Cyprus. Who is its state vis-a-vis the world? There are two states in Cyprus, not one. However, only one is visible to the world. Is the state in south Cyprus also your state? This is also what they are saying. They are also saying that they are not your state. This has been the case for 15 years. I am now calling on the world: If you forget the 180,000 Muslim Turks living in northern Cyprus and ignore their state and if you consider the state in south Cyprus as the state of the north as well, nothing can be resolved.

In that case, there are two sovereign states on this island. The TRNC is a sovereign state. It has a flag, a state, territory, and a homeland. People come and say to me: This problem has remained unsolved for so many years. How can we solve it? I, in turn say: Easy. If you are seeking a political solution, you should inquire why it has remained unsolved for so long. If you deny the Turkish Cypriots, the TRNC, and the north of Cyprus which is the homeland of the Turks in north Cyprus, there can never be a solution. I am calling on the whole world: If you want a solution, accept and recognize the sovereignty and equality of the TRNC. Then, the two states that will exist on this island should sit down to negotiate how they will live. But, first, you should recognize the people, their state, and their head of state."

[03] DEMIREL ASSURES TURKISH CYPRIOTS TO RECEIVE WATER

Anatolia Agency (1401 hours, 6/5/00) reports that Turkish President Suleyman Demirel met with Rauf Denktash last Saturday.

Demirel said that it is a matter of few years to bring water to the pseudostate, adding "today we flied to TRNC over the line from where the water pipeline will pass."

After meeting tete-a-tete for 30 minutes, President Demirel and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash had meetings with many delegations.

When Turkish Cypriot farmers who came to visit them complained Demirel about the drought in "TRNC", Demirel said "water will be brought to TRNC".

Demirel later met with so-called acting parliament speaker Salih Cosar, so- called deputy premier Mustafa Akinci, the opposition party leader Serdar Denktash, leaders of other parties and "cabinet members."

Greek Cypriot press members wanted to pass to the occupied area to cover Demirel/s visit. But they were not permitted to pass "as they were late in applying."

President Suleyman Demirel also visited Eroglu at the hospital. He returned to Turkey Sunday evening.

[04] CEM MEETS ANNAN, NEW DATE TO BE FIXED ON CYPRUS

Anatolia Agency (0906 hours, 6/5/00) reports that a new date will be scheduled for the third round of Cyprus talks supervised by the United Nations.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem had a 40 minute meeting with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan last Friday.

During the meeting, Annan told Cem that the third round of proximity talks will have to begin later than May 23 due to President Clerides/ surgery. Cem claimed the Turkish Cypriot side made constructive suggestions for the solution of the problem and added that Turkey supported these efforts.

Annan said he was glad to see Turkish-Greek relations improving noticeably.

    [05] EROGLU IN GOOD CONDITION

Anatolia Agency (1135 hours, 7/5/00) reports that so-called prime minister Dervis Eroglu who underwent an angiocardiography is in good condition and he was transferred to his private room from intensive care.

If not faced with any problem, Eroglu will be released from the hospital on Wednesday. His doctors said that it would be too early to tell when Eroglu could start working.

[06] TURKISH CYPRIOTS OBSERVE MODERATION IN GREEK CYPRIOT STAND AT IPU

According to illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (0500 hours, 8/5/00) the so-called assembly delegation, which participated in the 103d Interparliamentary Union (IPU) conference in Amman, returned to the occupied area and in a statement about the "delegation/s" contacts, Ertugrul Hasipoglu, "assembly speader", said that the IPU meeting is the only meeting in which the Turkish Cypriots are officially invited and heard. Hasipoglu explained that in the past IPU reports used to cite the views of the Greek Cypriot side, but lately there has been a change in this regard. Hasipoglu stressed that the mention of both sides in Cyprus in the oral reports pertaining to the last two meetings constitutes an important development. Hasipoglu remarked that a moderation has been witnessed in the attitude of the Greek Cypriots during the past two meetings, and expressed the belief that this will be reflected in the talks. He added that positive stands were observed on the part of the Greek Cypriots with regard to the sine-qua-non conditions of the Turkish Cypriot side, namely sovereignty, political equality, and Turkey/s guarantee.

[07] SEZER ELECTED TURKISH PRESIDENT WITH 330 VOTES

Anatolia Agency (1317 hours, 5/5/00) reports that Constitutional Court President Ahmet Necdet Sezer has been elected the 10th president of the Turkish Republic. Sezer received 330 votes in the third round of voting held at the TGNA (Turkish Grand National Assembly), while his rival Nevzat Yalcintas received 113.
