[01] Denktash addresses Military Academy on Cyprus issue

Anatolia Agency (14:53 hours, 3.5.00) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said on Wednesday that the proximity talks on Cyprus will start in New York on May 23, adding "nobody can present the Greek Cypriot administration as the official government to us". Speaking in a conference on "Developments in the Region and Its Effects on Cyprus", held in the Turkish Military Academies Commandership, Denktash said that the Greek Cypriots will give priority to EU membership, "as they want to cancel the documents which prove the rights of Turkey over Cyprus. Our policy is reaching a compromise and agreement first". Denktash noted that "by compromise our status and equality will be confirmed. The rights of Turkey over Cyprus will be stressed and Turkish-Greek balance will be set up. Only after these, we can discuss the EU issue". The US tries to solve the Cyprus issue before the end of Clinton/s term in office, stressed Denktash and added that "there is pressure on us to solve the issue artificially although the Greek Cypriots didn/t accept the realities". Britain is also impatient, said Denktash and noted that Britain does its best to protect its own bases, it forgot its guarantor status and it tries to make the Greek Cypriots a member of the European Union (EU).

Denktash noted that they will give detailed information about the establishment and operation of confederal state during the third round of proximity talks in New York on May 23. The US, Britain and the United Nations (UN) seem to present them documents, said Denktash and added that "they don`t have the right to do that. They are not arbitrators. They are obliged to help both sides within the framework of the good will mission. We favour comprehensive negotiations".

Denktash further said that they wish to make Cyprus a friendship bridge between Turkey and Greece and added: "Nobody in Cyprus should attempt to take the sovereignty of Turks from them. I hope the United Nations (UN) won/t do these mistakes and won`t permit others to do such mistakes. Greek Cypriots file suits in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) due to their properties in the north and they had given the right to recompense in one of these cases", said Denktash and claimed that ECHR encouraged Greek Cypriots by that decision.

"We go to New York to prepare the basis of compromise. The compromise has to be built on sovereignty", said Denktash.

"EU makes a big mistake, the Cyprus issue has become more difficult to be solved when the EU started to deal with the issue", Denktash claimed.

He said that he will visit European countries to explain his ideas on the Cyprus issue after the meetings in New York.

[02] Cem: Confederation is still on the table

Anatolia Agency (14:27 hours, 3.5.00) reports that Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem staged a news conference at the Turkish House in New York and, inter alia, referred to Cyprus and said that "Turkey will continue to extend support to Denktash and assume an encouraging role on the Cyprus issue".

Cem continued: "The Turkish Cypriot side is no longer on the receiving end in Cyprus; it has become the side that determines the agenda. The confederation proposal of Denktash sets a good example to this end. The proposal is still on the table and is being discussed".

Cem will meet with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Friday.

Diplomatic sources say that in addition to the general political issues, Cem will convey Turkey/s views to Annan prior to the indirect talks in New York on 23 May.

[03] Ecevit: "Cyprus question different from the Aegean issue"

TRT 1 Television (17:00 hours, 3.5.00) reports that Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit has said that the Cyprus problem should be considered as different from the Aegean issue. He further said that there are two separate nations on the island and a solution can be reached on the island by the dialogue of these nations.

[04] Demirel to pay farewell visit

KIBRIS (4.5.00) reports that Turkish President Suleyman Demirel will pay an "official" farewell visit to the occupied area next Saturday, as the guest of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

Demirel will speak at the Ataturk square, where he will also be honoured by the dean of the "Near East University" Dr. Suat Gunsel with the "International Policy Honours Doctorate".

[05] Panel discussion on "Cyprus prior to EU"

According to KIBRIS (4.5.00) the Turkish Cypriot Cultural Association will organize a panel discussion on "Cyprus prior to EU" on 6 May, in Istanbul.

The so-called foreign affairs and defence minister Tahsin Ertugruloglu and Denktash/s advisor Taner Etkin will attend the panel as speakers.

Former Turkish Foreign Affairs Minister Murat Karayalcin will also participate in the panel.
