[04] Talat, German ambassador discuss EU issue

KIBRIS (31.3.00) reports that the leader of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) Mehmet Ali Talat met yesterday morning with the German Ambassador to Nicosia, Peter Wihdih.

Wihdih said that he will discuss with Talat the UN process related to the Cyprus problem and other international problems.

In his turn, Talat said, "following the recent developments, similar contacts have become frequent. This way, it is possible for the Turkish Cypriots to have the chance to take part in the EU accession process".

Talat also said that the Turkish Cypriots must overcome the lack of knowledge related to EU issues. Apart from the opening of a Turkish Cypriot representation office in Brussels, an information centre for EU issues must also be opened in the occupied areas.

Stressing that everybody must know what the EU is about, he added that this can be achieved through relevant educating.

Talat said that he believes Germany is one of the biggest powers in the EU and will contribute to the participation of Turkish Cypriots in the accession negotiations. He also said that only a singe Cyprus will be a member of EU.
