[01] Denktash denies Turkey sent constitutional experts

Noting that the Turkish Cypriot side is insistent on the abolition of the "embargoes", Denktash said that the "embargoes" are not destroying the Turkish Cypriot side but are adversely affecting the talks as signs of enmity and lack of conciliation.

Denktash further reiterated the Turkish Cypriot stand of establishing a confederation, adding: "A confederation is the only package I will be giving to my people". He continued: "Even if the talks go on for years we shall never relinquish our status. We are not a minority. We are the founding partners. We have political equality. We have sovereignty rights. We will not renounce Turkey/s guarantees. This has always been our defense".

[02] Turkish Major-General visits pseudostate

Timor will also pay a visit to Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, so- called TRNC assembly speaker Ertugrul Hasipoglu, Turkey/s envoy Eertugrul Apakan, so-called prime minister Dervis Eroglu. He will leave the island on 11 March.

[03] Visit to Hala Sultan Tekke

The paper adds that Turkish Cypriot journalists, who visited the Tekke when UN Secretary General/s special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto toured the Larnaca area, have reported that the place was cleaned and painted.

[04] Pseudostate to participate in three tourism fairs

The first fair will be the TTB Berlin 2000 Fair that it will be held between 11-15 March and the pseudostate will be represented there with the so-called Turkish Cypriot Airways.

The second Fair is the MIT 2000 Moscow International Journeys and Tourism Fair between 22-25 March and the third is the UTAZAS Budapest Tourism Fair between 22-26 March.

[05] Other "presidential" candidates

Ayhan Kaymak was born in Varosha in 1936 and is the son of Faiz Kaymak, a close partner of Fazil Kuchuk. He studied economics in the USA. He works now as a professor at the "East Mediterranean University (EMU)."

Moreover, AVRUPA (9.3.00) reports that the "candidates" will be eight. The two new candidates are Sener Levent and Turgut Asaroglu, who will run as independent candidates.

[07] Denktash meets Argentine Ambassador

Denktash informed the Ambassador on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem.

Denktash claimed that "the world must recognize both governments in order to solve the Cyprus problem. Greek Cypriots cannot represent us under the title of Cyprus".

Vicente Espeche Gil said that he will inform his government on the results of his contacts in Cyprus and that he was witness to interesting developments during his stay on the island. He also said that he noticed serious efforts on the part of the UN on the Cyprus problem, adding that the UN/s efforts are on a good road for the solution of the Cyprus problem. (DP)

[08] Talat to meet Hannay in London

Talat will also give a reception for the representatives of Turkish Cypriot Organizations in London and for a number of British MPs.

Talat will return on 11March.

Correction

With reference to item 2 of our Turkish Mass Media Bulletin dated 7.3.2000, please note that the correct text should read as follows:

"KIBRIS (7.2.00) reports that the leader of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP), Mehmet Ali Talat, had a meeting yesterday morning with the Czech Ambassador to Cyprus, Mrs. Vera Jerabkova. The latest developments in the Cyprus issue were evaluated during the meeting."

[B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS

[09] Denktash: "It will be against TRNC if I am not elected"

"What bothers Denktash is that upon his return from the Geneva talks on Cyprus he has, this time, encountered a banking crisis on the island. And he complains that `I still have not embarked on election work because of all these problems/.

Still, he is sure of himself. First he speaks about the Cyprus negotiations and implies that he does not find the United States/ attitude towards TRNC to be warm. And bemoans about them facilitating Turkey/s entry into EU in exchange for concessions in Cyprus.

Denktash is pleased about the rapprochement between Turkey and Greece but is also worried that this might in the future bring about other problems:

`This should not push us to a point where the international community might come up saying, `After so much rapprochement, you too should make some concession/."

Sarikaya adds that they put to him the question, "What will the effect of the 15 April elections be on the negotiations?", and says that with a decisive tone of voice Denktash replied: "If I am not elected the talks will turn against the TRNC".

Sarikaya further says that Denktash still believes that he will win over his strongest rival, Dervis Eroglu and concludes:

"The planeload of businessmen on the TOBB delegation, who have come to Cyprus for the first time, appeared supportive of Denktash during their contacts. Clearly, the attitude of the delegation indicates that Turkey/s preferences also lie with Denktash, who for years has shouldered and carried on the Cyprus struggle single-handedly".
