[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash hopes talks proceed to third roundAnatolia Agency (17:36 hours, 27.1.00), reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash held a consultation meeting prior to the second round of proximity talks which will take place in Geneva on January 31.Fifty-six people including the members of the so-called council of ministers, former so-called parliament speaker and «deputies», university rectors and experts attended the meeting. «Prime minister» Dervis Eroglu joined the meeting later. Denktash noted that transferring the talks to the second round was a good sign and an indication of some progress. «If the talks are transferred to the third round, we will interpret it as a good situation. We will work to transfer the whole issue to the third round», he said. About Turkey/s EU candidacy, Denktash said EU candidacy made Turkey more powerful and added that they were very happy about the present situation. [02] «Delegation» continues contacts in StrasbourgHALKIN SESI (28.1.00) reports that the so-called parliamentary delegation, headed by «assembly speaker» Ertugrul Hasipoglu, continues its contacts in Strasbourg.The delegation had meetings with officials of the Council of Europe/s Parliamentary Assembly on issues like the lifting of the «sports embargo» and the protection of the cultural heritage. The delegation met with the director of the Assembly/s Youth and Sports Committee, Mr. Jackic. During the meeting Jackic said that the right for sports is a human rights issue. He said he will make all the necessary efforts to put this matter on the agenda of the committee. The rapporteur of the Cultural Heritage Committee, Mrs. Stepova, who met with delegation, said that she will come to Cyprus in the near future for research work in both sides related to the issue of the protection of the cultural heritage. (DP) [03] Energy problemAccording to BIRLIK (28.1.00) the so-called minister of agriculture, Irsen Kucuk who is currently in Turkey, had a meeting yesterday with the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Cumhur Ersumer.During the meeting, Kucuk said that the occupied area was facing a serious energy problem and demanded Turkey/s assistance to overcome this difficulty. In his turn Ersumer said that once the occupied area/s «Energy Master Plan» is completed, Turkey will extend the necessary assistance regarding energy production and the transfer of the produced energy. (MY) [04] Denktash meets Italian AmbassdorAccording to ORTAM (28.1.2000) Italy/s Ambassador to Cyprus, Fransesco Bascone, had a meeting yesterday with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.During the meeting the latest developments in the Cyprus problem were discussed, as well as the forthcoming second round of proximity talks. ORTAM further reports that prior to the meeting Ambassador Bascone congratulated Denktash on his 76 birthday. (MY) [05] Muradov pays farewell visit to TalatAccording to YENIDUZEN (28.1.00) Russia/s outgoing Ambassador to Cyprus, Georgy Muradov, paid a farewell visit to Republican Turkish Party leader, Mehmet Ali Talat.During the meeting Ambassdor Muradov said that «Settlement of the Cyprus problem is very important for stability in the region». He further said that Russia was ready to contribute to the settlement of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the UN resolutions on Cyprus. He said that Russia/s position is based on these resolutions.
