[01] Denktash meets Bandler, rules out concessions

Illegal Bayrak radio (15:30 hours, 24.8.99) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has said that ``no concessions will be made from the views approved by the people, the government, and the Assembly of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus''.

Tuesday, Denktash had a meeting with the new US Ambassador to Cyprus Donald Bandler. The meeting extended over lunch. In a statement after the meting, Denktash said that he conveyed the Turkish Cypriot side´s views on the Cyprus problem to Ambassador Bandler, and that he answered the ambassador´s questions on the issue. Denktash stressed that at the start of the meeting, the ambassador told him that he did not bring any US plan. He noted that Ambassador Bandler told him that the aim of the United States is to help the sides reach a realistic solution. Denktash stressed: ``If they are going to help, they must keep the Turkish Cypriot resolutions in mind''.

He repeated his claim that the recognition of the Greek Cypriots as the legitimate government of Cyprus is the reason why the Cyprus problem could not be solved until now.

In a short statement to the press following the meeting, Ambassador Bandler referred to the Greek Cypriot press reports and said: ``There are press reports to the effect that I have a 10-point plan in my pocket. That is not true. We are not trying to bring a ready-made solution. We are trying to work together with the sides and help them actively in order to achieve a just and lasting solution. We had a good meeting with Mr. Denktash.'' The ambassador recalled that President Clinton and the US Administration promised to help the sides start a solution process in connection with the Cyprus problem, adding: ``At our meeting, we also discussed certain issues related to that. I am sure that we will have many opportunities to discuss these issues in the future.

[02] Ertugruloglu discusses Clinton report with US Congressional aides

According to illegal Bayrak radio (10:30 hours, 24.8.99) US Congressional aides yesterday visited Tahsin Ertugruloglu, so-called minister of foreign affairs and defense. He said that this was the second group of Congressional aides being briefed on the Cyprus issue. He noted that together they will assess President Clinton´s Cyprus report. He pointed out that in the report, ``President Clinton refers to Clerides as president and to Denktash as community leader''. Ertugruloglu asserted that such ``mistakes'' in the report will not help bring about peace, but on the contrary, endanger it. He added that they will discuss the other aspects of the report with the Congressional aides.

Ertugruloglu said that he will brief the Congressional aides on the ``realities'' of Cyprus. He claimed that President Clinton´s approach is the result of a mistake of many years.

[03] Eroglu ceretain of no change in Turkey´s Cyprus policy

According to KIBRIS (25.8.99) so-called prime minister Dervish Eroglu, during a live programme broadcast by KIBRIS FM, has declared: ``It is true that there is a rapprochement between Turkey and Greece because of the devastating earthquake. At this stage it is difficult to know how sincere the Greeks are. However, these developments will not change Cyprus´s foreign policy.''

He went on and said: ``Esteemed Ecevit has put forward in a very clear and open way the Cyprus policy, prior to his US visit and prior to the earthquake. Esteemed Ecevit has conveyed the message that he will not allow any pressure to be exerted on him on the Cyprus problem. Therefore I do not think that there will be a change in Turkey´s stance nor the US will resort to exerting excessive pressure regarding the Cyprus problem.

As a matter of fact, presidential elections in the USA do not draw much interest from the people. US politicians, in order to pull the Greek lobby on their side, put their finger on the Cyprus problem from time to time, and put forward some proposals and these proposals always remain pending. If one takes into consideration the fact that no proposal put forward until today has been put into practice, then it becomes clear that it is not possible for Turkey to introduce a change in its Cyprus policy''.

Speaking on domestic issues, Eroglu, said that regarding next year´s so- called presidential elections his party´s appropriate organs have discussed the issue and taken decisions. ``However, it is early to announce these decisions'', Eroglu declared.

He denied that Turkey was exerting pressure on his party (the National Unity Party) so as not to take part in the so-called elections.

[04] Denktash: Sovereignty issue no longer on the negotiation table

According to KIBRIS (25.8.99) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash during a meeting with US legislative assistants John Weaver, Andrea Andrews and Paul Doerer, referred to the Cyprus problem and claimed that ``the sovereignty issue is no more on the negotiation table, because from the political point of view there are two sovereign states in Cyprus. We do not consider the sovereignty an issue to be discussed at the negotiation table''.

KIBRIS adds that the three legislative assistants who arrived in the occupied area at the invitation of the so-called Turkish Cypriot History Association will have contacts and hold meetings regarding the Cyprus problem.

KIBRIS reports that the Americans will stay until Sunday and will try to get first hand information during their contacts.

[05] Azeri newspaper favours ``TRNC'' recognition

YENI DEMOKRAT (25.8.99) reports that the Azeri newspaper ``MILLET'', in an article on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Turkish invasion and occupation, says that Azerbaidjan should be the second state extending ``recognition'' to the pseudostate.

YENI DEMOKRAT says that the article was compiled by Azeri journalists who were invited by the pseudostate to the occupied area on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the occupation.

``MILLET'' also publishes the text of an interview given by Denktash to the paper.

[07] Belarus journalists prepare ``TRNC'' promotion programme

AVRUPA (25.8.99) reports that the group of three journalists from the Belarus State Televizyon is in the occupied area preparing a programme to promote the ``TRNC''.

The Belarus guest journalists yesterday visited Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and the so-called state minister and deputy prime minister Mustafa Akinci.

Akinci informed the Belarus group about tourism in the ``TRNC'' adding that they could build a tourism bridge between Belarus and the ``TRNC''. He also stressed that last year around 2,000 Russian tourists came to the ``TRNC, but none from Belarus.

[08] Turkish wheelchair basketball team in ``TRNC''

According to ``KIBRIS'' (25.8.99) the Turkish wheelchair basketball team Mesarya Alternatifspor which is sponsored by the so-called Turkish Cypriot Airlines, has chosen to have the ``TRNC'' instead of Istanbul as its home- play.

The Mesarya Alternatifspor team will play 11 out of its 22 games at the Ataturk Athletic Centre in the occupied part of Nicosia.
