[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Ecevit wonders why U.S is interested in Cyprus problem AKSAM (15.6.99) reports that Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit has sent aletter to U.S. President Bill Clinton where he wonders over American interest in the Cyprus problem.``We find it difficult to comprehend why you are so interested in the Cyprus problem. For 25 years now there is peace in Cyprus. South Cyprus has developed thanks to the E.U. The TRNC, despite the embargo, is developing,'' Ecevit allegedly writes in his letter. [02] Austria forbids pseudostate participation in Vienna University lecture KIBRIS (16.6.99) reports that Austrian authorities have not permitted thatthe pseudostate be invited at a lecture organised by Vienna University on ``Where is Cyprus heading to?''. It reports that ``while the university had decided to invite a TRNC representative as a lecturer, the official Austrian authorities have forbidden the invitation under the excuse it would cause major problems''.[B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS[03] Columnist on US involvement in Cyprus Sedat Ergin, writing in HURRIYET (15.6.99) says, inter alia, that it hasbeen made clear that the US government and Britain, who has prepared a draft constitution in the framework of a solution in Cyprus, are the front- runners in reviving the Cyprus issue by including it in the agenda of the G8. He says that it seems the U.S. want to see a significant progress made in the Cyprus problem next fall. The U.S, he adds, are trying to pass the message that progress in Cyprus will facilitate President Clinton´s participation in the OSCE summit that will take place next November in Istanbul .Ergin says that it thus can be concluded that in the next fall the Cyprus problem will be at the top of the international political agenda. As regards how Ankara and the ``TRNC'' view these developments, Ergin says that Denktash on his part does not welcome them and in addition he has to take into account his participation in the so-called presidential elections in 2000. It is equally important that National Unity Party Leader Eroglu is currently the so-called prime minister, who is known for his intransigent stand on the Cyprus problem and is preparing to run as ``presidential candidate'' along with Denktash, Ergin says. As for the way Ankara is thinking, Premier Ecevit´s recent statement that ``the TRNC is a success for Turkey. Each passing day, the TRNC is consolidated even further'' is quite enlightening, Ergin says. ``Ecevit´s statement must be considered as the honest view of a politician who prefers the permanency of the TRNC to a solution based on concessions'' he says and adds that it is not hard to predict that the coalition partner in the Turkish government, the MHP, will not wish to make its first steps in foreign policy by making concessions in the Cyprus problem. ``Furthermore, we are living through a period when the EU has last, for good, its influence on Ankara, by once more disregarding Turkey at the Koln summit, and when ANAP leader Yilmaz utters such statements as ´We need to turn towards a strategy that excludes EU accession´,'' Ergin says and concludes that in view of the above ``it doesn´t seem that political conjuncture in Turkey will be able to satisfy U.S.A. impatience as regards the Cyprus problem''.
