[01] Denktash calls on Clerides to renounce armament policy

According to illegal Bayrak radio Rauf Denktash called on Greek Cypriot leader Clerides to renounce the policy of armament and advised him not to pursue new adventures to lead Hellenism to victory.

In a statement he issued Denktash said that the statement Clerides made yesterday on the issue of EOKA should be well assessed. Recalling that the Greek Cypriot side wants demilitarization and the abolition of the guarantee agreement, Denktash continued: ``The Greek Cypriots, however, will secretly authorize every party leader to establish guerrilla armies, just as they did during the years between 1960 and 1963, and when the time comes will again attack us. This is what they mean by demilitarization.''

Pointing out that Clerides is trying to destroy the reality of the existence of two peoples on the island, Denktash said that a person who hides behind the false title of the Republic of Cyprus, who deploys missiles on the island, who gives missiles to Greece, and who spends millions of dollars on armament each year, cannot talk for peace. Noting that Turks exist on the island and that the current state has been achieved as a result of their struggle Denktash concluded by saying that Clerides should abandon his armament efforts and his initiatives to take the problem to international platforms.

[02] Turkey should be EU candidate member

According to Ankara Anatolia (27.5.99) the Association of Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen (TUSIAD) and the Confederation of German Industrialists (Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie-BDI) issued a joint statement within the framework of their contacts in Germany (26.5.99) .

According to the statement Germany, as one of the most important and powerful economies of the European Union, has to protect not only the EU policies but also her national interests when the EU expansion process is discussed.

Pointing out that such an attitude will enable Turkey to fulfil the criteria for the EU full-membership by adopting democratic and economic reforms, the statement said that such a development will create the basis necessary for most effective solution of the existing problems between Turkey and Germany and also the Cyprus issue.

The statement adds that Turkey, as a reliable and important NATO ally, has played effective role for years in security of Europe in critical times, stressing that Turkey´s clear principle of separating religious affairs from the state affairs, is a noteworthy criterion.

Noting that Turkey´s imports from the EU have been doubled, the statement said that the joint project in the Black Sea and the Central Asia created important cooperation opportunities between Turkey and Germany(..) Consequently, TUSIAD and BDI request the EU to bring into force the financial protocol which will remove Turkey´s financial losses stemming from the Customs Union decisions.

TUSIAD delegation led by Erkut Yucaoglu met (26.5.99) with Werner Muller, the German Minister of Economy. Later, they held a meeting with Prof. Dr. Klaus Gretschmann, the General Director of the German Prime Ministry Department of Economy and Financial Affairs and was received by Wolfgang Ischinger, the Undersecretary of the German Foreign Ministry.

Following the meetings, Yucaooglu said inter alia, that Germany, Term President of the European Union carried out a serious and comprehensive initiative for Turkey´s rapprochement with the EU and her entering the necessary candidacy mechanisms.

``We, as the business world, together with the BDI want to help Germany in this initiative. When asked whether Turkey´s membership to the EU will be discussed at the Koln Summit, Yucaoglu told the A.A. correspondent. ``I don´t think that very important decisions will be taken at the summit . However, I feel that the steps to promote the Turkish-EU relations are being taken. Actually, we are speaking within a middle-term and long-term frame''.

[03] Hasipoglu - COE committee debates

According to illegal Bayrak Radio (25.5.99) Turkish Cypriot ``Assembly Speaker'' Ertugrul Hasipoglu asked during an interview to comment on what happened at the Council of Europe Political Committee (25.5.99) he said that the Greek Cypriots spoke of human rights, peace, the future, of joining the EU together. We said, he underlined, that there are two states in Cyprus today, that there are problems in Cyprus, and that if we had no problems we would not be at that meeting. The Greek Cypriots want a multinational force to be deployed in Cyprus as a guarantor and to ensure security. This argument was also included in the report of the Political Committee´s rapporteur. We rejected this outright.'' We said that we will not accept anything other than Turkey´s effective and active guarantee''. The most important point we stressed, he added, was that we have a ``state'' and that a solution will become very easy the minute our state is recognized. We explained clearly that political equality and our sovereignty rights are important for us, and that unless they exist, no solution will work in Cyprus.

    [04] AVRUPA on Yorgadjis

AVRUPA (28.5.99) continues to report on the trial opened by Denktash against the three journalists of the paper.

AVRUPA today concentrates on Denktash´s statement made in 17 March 1970 that former Minister of Interior Polycarpos Yorgadjis though he was an EOKA man become a matured person as the years went on.

In his statement Denktash considered him as ``a statesman who changed his course and stance as the years went on and wished that Yorgadjis assassination is the last political assassination.

AVRUPA wonders how, Yorgadjis who was sworned enemy of Turks, who was the main architect of the ``AKRITAS'' plan can be considered ``matured statesman'' by Denktash.
