[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Ecevit on government issueTRT Television network (18:30 hours, 23.5.99) aired a live interview with Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit by Kurtul Altug, Ertugrul Ozkok, and Guneri Civaoglu on the ``Political Pulse'' program at the studio.Stating that in a future DSP-MHP coalition he will be the Prime Minister and there will be a deputy prime minister from the DSP and one from the MHP, Ecevit said the DSP deputy prime minister will be Mr. Bahceli. He added that the confidence crisis between the two parties is now a thing of the past and he has full confidence in the present MHP administration. Asked whether he can say that there is a common denominator on foreign policy issues, Ecevit replied: ``That would be my guess. We have not discussed the details but Turkey´s national foreign policy pursues a certain line. There might be various differences pertaining to style but the basic principles of that policy are sound. Therefore, I do not believe that there will be any problems''. Asked why did he feel the need to go to Cyprus after he was designated to form the government, Ecevit replied: ``I thought there would not be another chance to contemplate in peace and tranquillity.'' And he further clarified that that was the only reason. On the EU issue, Ecevit inter alia said: ``As for the EU, the situation is very clear. The existing agreements necessitate the granting of certain rights to Turkey. Moreover, the historical and geographic realities also necessitate those rights. We, however, are not begging. We are not open to proposals such as the EU opening us the back door in exchange for the implementation of certain policies in Cyprus, the Aegean, and the southeast. If they want to discuss political issues with us then they should make us a member or they should make us a member candidate. On the other hand, we are trying to develop our economic and political relations with all the EU member countries on a one to one basis. We have not severed our relations. Neither have we renounced seeking our rights. Germany, the current EU term president, is striving to achieve something on the issue. [sentence indistinct] This issue, however, has placed on our agenda the necessity for Turkey to open up to the world. Up until a few years ago, we had no neighbour or no regional country on whose friendship we could rely on. Whereas, now we can count the countries on whose friendship we cannot rely on. We have also opened up to regions beyond our own such as the Far East. We have developed relations with Japan. We have developed our relations with the United States. We are [words indistinct] with the Balkans, Europe, and the Central Asian countries. Had there been no economic crisis in Russia we would have [words indistinct]. We have realized that the world is not composed of solely western Europe. Having realized that, I believe that the [word indistinct] before us will gradually melt. I hope that they will adopt a more realistic stand toward Turkey''. [02] Turkish Cypriots link pseudostate´s security to the national interests ofTurkey and AzerbaidjanKIBRIS (25.5.99) reports that the four-member Turkish Cypriot delegation which went to Baku, Azerbaidjan, to give lectures and conferences on the Cyprus problem in various universities there, continued their contacts.
