    [01] Ecevit on government issue

TRT Television network (18:30 hours, 23.5.99) aired a live interview with Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit by Kurtul Altug, Ertugrul Ozkok, and Guneri Civaoglu on the ``Political Pulse'' program at the studio.

Stating that in a future DSP-MHP coalition he will be the Prime Minister and there will be a deputy prime minister from the DSP and one from the MHP, Ecevit said the DSP deputy prime minister will be Mr. Bahceli. He added that the confidence crisis between the two parties is now a thing of the past and he has full confidence in the present MHP administration.

Asked whether he can say that there is a common denominator on foreign policy issues, Ecevit replied:

``That would be my guess. We have not discussed the details but Turkey´s national foreign policy pursues a certain line. There might be various differences pertaining to style but the basic principles of that policy are sound. Therefore, I do not believe that there will be any problems''.

Asked why did he feel the need to go to Cyprus after he was designated to form the government, Ecevit replied:

``I thought there would not be another chance to contemplate in peace and tranquillity.'' And he further clarified that that was the only reason.

On the EU issue, Ecevit inter alia said: ``As for the EU, the situation is very clear. The existing agreements necessitate the granting of certain rights to Turkey. Moreover, the historical and geographic realities also necessitate those rights. We, however, are not begging. We are not open to proposals such as the EU opening us the back door in exchange for the implementation of certain policies in Cyprus, the Aegean, and the southeast. If they want to discuss political issues with us then they should make us a member or they should make us a member candidate. On the other hand, we are trying to develop our economic and political relations with all the EU member countries on a one to one basis. We have not severed our relations. Neither have we renounced seeking our rights. Germany, the current EU term president, is striving to achieve something on the issue. [sentence indistinct] This issue, however, has placed on our agenda the necessity for Turkey to open up to the world. Up until a few years ago, we had no neighbour or no regional country on whose friendship we could rely on. Whereas, now we can count the countries on whose friendship we cannot rely on. We have also opened up to regions beyond our own such as the Far East. We have developed relations with Japan. We have developed our relations with the United States. We are [words indistinct] with the Balkans, Europe, and the Central Asian countries. Had there been no economic crisis in Russia we would have [words indistinct]. We have realized that the world is not composed of solely western Europe. Having realized that, I believe that the [word indistinct] before us will gradually melt. I hope that they will adopt a more realistic stand toward Turkey''.

[02] Turkish Cypriots link pseudostate´s security to the national interests of

    Turkey and Azerbaidjan

KIBRIS (25.5.99) reports that the four-member Turkish Cypriot delegation which went to Baku, Azerbaidjan, to give lectures and conferences on the Cyprus problem in various universities there, continued their contacts. The delegation gave a lecture yesterday at the ``Garp University'' in Baku.

The delegation made up of Ahmet Gazioglu, Ismail Bozkurt, Sabahattin Ismail and the so-called deputy president of the East Mediterranean University Gurhan Dogan, yesterday gave a lecture on the Cyprus problem and opened an exhibition called ``TRNC Struggle'' as well as a book exhibition.

During the lecture, Bozkurt spoke about the roots of the Turkish Cypriots and the Enosis activities of the Greek Cypriots during Turkish and British Rule.

In his turn Sabahattin Ismail spoke about ``What is the Cyprus problem?''. He claimed that the Cyprus problem was the violation of the rule of law and of the human rights of the Turkish Cypriots by the Greek Cypriots as well as the security of Turkey.

Sabahattin Ismail further claimed that ``the security of the TRNC has direct relation with the national security and national interests of Turkey and Azerbaidjan.''

Ismail said that the petrol terminal on the southern coast of Turkey where Azerbaidjani petrol will be delivered through the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline and shipped to world markets lies opposite to the ``TRNC'' shores.

In his turn Denktash´s advisor Ahmet Gazioglu talked about the 1960 Cyprus Republic, the Turkish invasion, occupation and the Unilateral Declaration of the pseudostate.

The last speaker was Gurhan Dogan who spoke about the so-called East Mediterranean University (EMU).

Meanwhile, at end of a joint symposium organized the other day, a joint declaration was adopted in which among other things, the recognition of the ``TRNC'' by Azerbaidjan and other Turkic states is demanded.

It is also proposed that an Azeri Research Centre be established in the ``EMU'' and a Cyprus Research Centre at the Higher Diplomacy University in Baku. (MY)

[03] Eroglu on measures against those responsible for ``citizenship'' scandal

According to KIBRIS (25.5.99) the so-called prime minister Dervish Eroglu, when asked to comment on the issue of selling ``citizenship'' to Chinese, declared that there are people who are trying to exploit the situation. `` If it is established that a politician has received money for this, the Assembly will remove that person´s immunity and will refer him to the appropriate organs'', he said.

Eroglu further said that the necessary inquiry has been opened regarding the issue.
