[01] British High Commissioner visits Talat

Illegal Bayrak radio (15:30 hours, 18.5.99) reports that Republican Turkish Party leader Mehmet Ali Talat met with British High Commissioner Edward Clay, who assumed his post last week. The meeting was held within the framework of the contacts started by Clay with politicians in Cyprus with the aim of obtaining information on the Cyprus issue.

In statements to illegal TAK (Turkish Cypriot News Agency) before the meeting, Talat and Clay underlined the importance of registering progress for the solution of the Cyprus problem. In his statement, Talat said that Britain is an important country for Cyprus because it is one of the three guarantor states. He declared: ``Britain is a very important country for us. It is one of our guarantors. Moreover, it is one of the biggest forces in the EU, which takes an interest in the Cyprus issue and maintains contact with it. Therefore, we must discuss everything with Mr. Clay, express our views, and listen to theirs. In short, we must contribute to the efforts to attain a better atmosphere in Cyprus''.

Talat noted that Caly´s visit is being held within the framework of the information tour he launched on the Cyprus issue, adding: ``In this first meeting, we will expound on our views regarding the Cyprus problem.''

Clay, in turn, remarked on his own behalf that the past must be set aside with regard to the Cyprus issue. ``I have only been in Cyprus for one week, therefore I cannot make an assessment on the Cyprus issue'', Clay explained. He described his visit as a courtesy visit and said that his aim is to receive first-hand information from both sides. Clay continued: ``In this information tour I started last week, my goal is to understand the impressions of the sides and learn their views''.

Explaining that he served as under secretary of the High Commissioner in Cyprus 10 years ago, therefore he is familiar with the Cyprus problem, Clay noted, however, that he wants to refresh his existing knowledge with the new ideas raised since then without involving history.
