[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] British High Commissioner visits TalatIllegal Bayrak radio (15:30 hours, 18.5.99) reports that Republican Turkish Party leader Mehmet Ali Talat met with British High Commissioner Edward Clay, who assumed his post last week. The meeting was held within the framework of the contacts started by Clay with politicians in Cyprus with the aim of obtaining information on the Cyprus issue.In statements to illegal TAK (Turkish Cypriot News Agency) before the meeting, Talat and Clay underlined the importance of registering progress for the solution of the Cyprus problem. In his statement, Talat said that Britain is an important country for Cyprus because it is one of the three guarantor states. He declared: ``Britain is a very important country for us. It is one of our guarantors. Moreover, it is one of the biggest forces in the EU, which takes an interest in the Cyprus issue and maintains contact with it. Therefore, we must discuss everything with Mr. Clay, express our views, and listen to theirs. In short, we must contribute to the efforts to attain a better atmosphere in Cyprus''. Talat noted that Caly´s visit is being held within the framework of the information tour he launched on the Cyprus issue, adding: ``In this first meeting, we will expound on our views regarding the Cyprus problem.'' Clay, in turn, remarked on his own behalf that the past must be set aside with regard to the Cyprus issue. ``I have only been in Cyprus for one week, therefore I cannot make an assessment on the Cyprus issue'', Clay explained. He described his visit as a courtesy visit and said that his aim is to receive first-hand information from both sides. Clay continued: ``In this information tour I started last week, my goal is to understand the impressions of the sides and learn their views''. Explaining that he served as under secretary of the High Commissioner in Cyprus 10 years ago, therefore he is familiar with the Cyprus problem, Clay noted, however, that he wants to refresh his existing knowledge with the new ideas raised since then without involving history. [02] Yachts of East Mediterranean Regata call at occupied port of KyreniaKIBRIS (19.5.99) reports that 110 yachts that are taking part in the East Mediterranean Yacht Regata (EMYR) have arrived at the occupied Kyrenia port.The EMYR, reports the paper, is the third biggest one in the world. It started on 24 April from the Atakoy Marina in Istanbul and will end on 7 June at the port of Alexandria in Egypt. The participating yachts will call at the following ports: on 20 May at Mersin, on 24 May at Alexandretta, on 26 at Lazkiye-Syria, on 29 May at Jounieh - Lebanon, on 1 June at occupied Famagusta port, on 2 June at Haifa - Israel, on 4 June at Hezra - Israel, on 5 June at Ashkelon - Israel and on 11 June at Alexadria. (MY) [03] Denktash admits establishing the TMTKIBRIS (19.5.99) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash while meeting the members of the new executive committee of the terrorist organization TMT, the so-called Turkish Cypriot Fighters Association, has said that he and late Burhan Nalbantoglu and Kemal Tanriserdi established the terrorist organization in November 1957.He said that this fact should be in the ``official history books''. ``It is not a shame to include this in the history books'' Denktash said. (MY) [04] Denktash meets visiting Rumanian journalistsKIBRIS (19.5.99) reports that the so-called prime minister of the pseudostate, Dervish Eroglu, had a meeting yesterday with the visiting Rumanian journalists, headed by Carol Roman.During the meeting Eroglu repeated the known views of the Turkish side and claimed that the Turkish and Greek Cypriots can no longer live together. He alleged that if they live together the lives of the Turkish Cypriots will be endangered. The Rumanian journalists also visited the so-called Turkish Cypriot News Agency (TAK) offices. (MY) [05] Turkish Lieutenant General inspects occupation troopsKIBRIS (19.5.99) reports that the chairman of the Turkish Land Forces, Control and Evaluation Council, Lieutenant General M. Altay Tokat, has arrived in the occupied area to conduct routine inspection of the Turkish occupation troops.Lt. General Tokat had meetings with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, Ertugrul Hasipoglu and Dervish Eroglu.
