[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Turkish Cypriots meet EU Cyprus Commission ChairmanIllegal Bayrak radio (10:30 hours, 11.5.99) reports that Ertugrul Hasipoglu, ``acting president'' and so-called speaker of the pseudo-assembly, met with John Corrie, member of the British of Parliament, member of the European Parliament (EP), and chairman of the EU Cyprus Commission. The meeting was held in Hasipoglu´s office at the ``assembly''.In a statement on the meeting, Hasipoglu said that he told Corrie that the Turkish Cypriots are ready for any kind of dialogue the minute ``the political equality and sovereignty'' of the pseudostate are recognized. Hasipoglu stressed that the Greek Cypriots´ approach to the Turkish Cypriots as a minority and their claim as the sole owners of sovereignty rights are unacceptable. He said: ``I clearly explained our stand and in detail. The fundamental thing here is the political equality and separate sovereignty rights of the two states.'' Meanwhile, Ilker Nevzat, the pseudo-assembly so-called legal and political affairs committee chairman, called on the EP to recognize the ``TRNC'' as a sovereign and independent state if it wants a solution in Cyprus. He said: ``If the EP wants the problem solved, it must listen to both sides equally''. Nevzat was commenting a meeting he had with John Corrie. Nevzat said that he stressed to Corrie that the solution of the Cyprus problem depends on the recognition of the fact that there are ``two separate states'' in Cyprus and that nothing can be achieved unless the ``TRNC'' is recognized. Replying to Corrie, who referred to membership in the EU, Nevzat asserted that this may be placed on the agenda only after the Cyprus problem is solved. When Corrie mentioned the economic advantages to be gained by EU membership, Nevzat said that the Cyprus problem is not a financial problem. [02] Mosque in Kyrenia opened for prayersAccording to HALKIN SESI (13.5.99) the Nurettin Ersin Pasha Mosque, built in occupied Kyrenia, will be opened for prayers today. The mosque is named after the retired Turkish general who took part in the invasion and occupation of the island and who arrived in the occupied area yesterday to take part in the opening ceremony.The mosque has been built by the Turkish Religious Foundation and the Cyprus Vakif organizaiton at the cost of 1,122,500 USD. (MY) [03] AVRUPA on the destruction of churchesAVRUPA (10.5.99) reports that wherever one looks one can see a small church. Most of them are small and one - room buildings, and they are collapsing one by one because of lack of maintenance and because of the time factor. The paper says:Due to lack of budgets we are unable to look after our own buildings and as the case is it will be an illusion to expect the restoration of these buildings. However, the ``time factor'' is not the only guilty party in the destruction of these places. There are people`s fingers involved as well. As a result of misbelieve people think that in most churches, valuable items such as gold and money are hidden and these people are unable to refrain themselves from digging the ground of these churches. Of course the result is disillusionment.
