[01] Eroglu Assesses 3-Month Performance Illegal Bayrak Radio (1030 hours, 5/5/99) reports that so-called prime

minister Dervis Eroglu has held a news conference on the "government" perfomance in its first three months. Eroglu said that the pseudostate has embarked on a new hopeful and auspicious period with the National Unity Party (UBP) and the Communal Liberation Party (TKP) "coalition government". Stating that "a lasting structure was built on the geographical and political foundations crystallized by the peace operation in 1974", Eroglu added: "This structure consists of two states which are side by side and from which there is no return".

Eroglu commented on world developments at the beginning of his address. He said that the Kosovo incidents and NATO's military operation have the potential of prompting new political developments and hot clashes, which entail the danger of spreading. Noting that the pseudostate cannot be excluded from the world's preparations for the 21st century, Eroglu said:"Undoubtedly, the TRNC cannot be excluded from this process. For this reason, it is our sypreme duty to protect the TRNC from any danger that can be prompted by the current incidents and developments and secure a stronger structure for it. To this end, therefore, a new process has been launched for the TRNC people and state in terms of foreign and domestic politics. During our government's term in office, relations between the TRNC and Turkey will strengthen and deepen with each passing day". Noting that relations with Turkey will reach new dimensions and that special relations will be conducted at the highest level, Eroglu said that the "government's" foreign policies rest on the principles of maintaining and strenghtening the independent identity of the "TRNC" and promoting it in the international arena.

In reply to reporters' questions during his new conference, Eroglu announced that the UBP will submit a candidate for the "presidential elections" in 2000, adding that the candidate has not yet been determined. Explaining that no Turkish official, including Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, had advised him not to submit his candidacy for the "presidency", Eroglu added: "The rumours on this issue were disseminated intentionally. The discussions on the presidential elections started very early; therefore, the speculation with regard to this issue will increase as time goes by."

In reply to another question, Eroglu said that there were no problems between Rauf Denktash and the UBP-TKP "coalition government". Upon being reminded of the articles appearing in the Turkish press about diplomas' being sold at the pseudostate's universities, Eroglu said that an investigation was launched into the issue and that the necessary steps will be taken if this is true.
