[01] Denktash, Eroglu return from Turkey, comment on contacts

Illegal Bayrak radio (6:00 hours, 23.3.99) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash completed his contacts in Istanbul and returned to the occupied area. In a statement at occupied Tymbou airport, he said that he attended the opening of an exhibition of his photographs which, he added, was one of the most successful.

Denktash said that he also had the opportunity to meet with numerous Turkish officials who visited the exhibition.

He claimed that the Greek Cypriots must accepted that there is a separation, and that the two separate units are two equal ``states''.

So-called prime minister Eroglu also returned to the occupied area from Turkey and in a statement upon his arrival he said that he was hosted on the TRT´s Political Pulse program on Sunday evening [21 March] and at the morning news program on ATV on 22 March. He noted that during both programs, he discussed the Cyprus problem and especially the alleged ties between the PKK and Greece. He said that he explained ``how impossible it is to live together with the Greek Cypriots whose hearts and brains are filled with hostility toward the Turks'', as he put it.

Eroglu affirmed that he stressed once again the Turkish Cypriots´ determination to uphold the ``TRNC''. He added: ``The TRNC can be upheld by being economically strengthened''.

Eroglu said that he also discussed the developments between the EU and the Cyprus Government. He said: ``Time will show. We must make very good use of this time.''

He expressed the belief that his contacts were very useful ``in terms of explaining the Cyprus cause to the world.''

[02] Eroglu denies Varosha, Morphou will be given to Greeks

According to illegal Bayrak radio (16:30 hours, 20.3.99), so-called prime minister Eroglu was asked to comment on a Greek Cypriot newspaper report to the effect that the eight developed countries drew up a plan on Cyprus according to which Varosha and Morphou would be given to the Greek Cypriots. Eroglu replied: ``Obviously, the United States is planning a joint kind of action with those countries. However, those who reach decisions about us in our absence and those who want land from us should know that the Turkish Cypriots are determined to protect their land and state.''

[03] Eroglu, Akinci deny existence of US plan on Cyprus

Anatolia Agency (1221: hours, 24.3.99) reports that Dervis Eroglu, so- called prime minister of the pseudostate, commenting on reports that the United States is preparing a new plan on the Cyprus issue and that it will launch its initiatives in the wake of the elections in Turkey, said: ``No plan has been submitted to us. Moreover, the decisive authority is here, not in the United States.''

In reply to reporters´ questions, Eroglu said that he is following all the reports from the press and that no plan has been submitted to the pseudo- government.

Eroglu said that US officials have always wanted to be involved in the issue, that they have always had a stand on the Cyprus issue, and that they have prepared reports on Cyprus. Eroglu continued:

``US President Bill Clinton and we have different desires. We are the ones who live in this country and we should be the ones to decide on an agreement. The United States will reach decisions in line with its own interests. Their decisions, however, are not binding on us. The important issue is to prepare and sign an agreement that is acceptable to us. In conclusion, the decisive authority is here, not there.''

Mustafa Akinci, so-called state minister and deputy prime minister, replying to a question on the same issue said: ``There is no plan or initiative. We have received no concrete proposal.''

[04] Denktash repeats that Turkey will never leave Cyprus to Greece

Anatolia Agency (16.45 hours, 25.3. 99) reports that Hasan Basri Aktan, Turkey´s Transportation Minister, visited the occupied area yesterday.

Aktan said in his statements during his visit that the ``TRNC'' is important for Turkey and the latter will continue her support in the field of infrastructure for the development of the pseudostate.

Aktan said that everybody should know that there is a 65-million-people power behind the Turkish Cypriots.

Aktan also submitted the projects concerning the rail system, port, and airport constructions to ``prime minister'' Dervis Eroglu, stating that these projects will be put into force in a short period of time.

Meanwhile, Rauf Denktash had a meeting with Aktan and claimed that the Greek Cypriots build up weapons. Denktash said that ``this weapon pile up is too much for the Turkish Cypriots and too small for Turkey''.

Denktash emphasized that the biggest source of peace and guarantee for Turkish Cypriots is Turkey, adding that Turkey will never leave Cyprus to Greece.

Meanwhile, the ``protocol'', which foresees Turkcell to start activities in the pseudostate was signed. With this ``protocol'', Turkcell will start activities in ``TRNC'' just like Telsim. The Telsim subscribers who live abroad will also be able to use their cellular phones in the pseudostate.

    [05] Osman Orek passes away

All the local papers (25.3.99) report on the death of Osman Orek following a heart operation in London. He died on Wednesday 24.3.99.

KIBRIS says that following a successful open-heart operation last Thursday at the Wellington Hospital in London, Osman Orek was removed from the intensive care unit on Monday. Subsequently, however, he suffered stomach bleeding which resulted in his kidneys and lungs not functioning properly, thus leading to his death.

Born in Nicosia on 26 December 1925, Osman Orek, a lawyer by profession, was the Cyprus Repubilc´s first Defence Minister in 1960. Later on he was the so-called foreign and defence minister of the ``Turkish Cypriot Provisional Administration''. During the so-called TFSC (Turkish Federated State of Cyprus) period he served as so-called prime minister.

He will be buried tomorrow (27.3.99) in the occupied part of Nicosia. (MY)
