[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Feasibility study for railway line in the occupied areaHALKIN SESI (19.2.99) reports that with a view to easing the road traffic and encourage mass transport , the issue of establishing a railway system in the occupied area is under study.It reports that a team from Turkish State Railways Administration continue to conduct feasibility studies in the occupied area for a railway line which will connect occupied Famagusta to occupied Morphou. The decision to conduct a feasibility study, reports the paper, was taken at the ``Turkey-TRNC Partnership Council'' and once the report is compiled and finished it will be submitted to the so-called Partenership Council for further evaluation. (MY) [02] Claims of radioactive waste left behind by CMC at occupied Karavostasi mineKIBRIS (19.2.99) reports under banner headlines that the Cyprus Mines Corporation, which used to operate in the occupied village of Karavostasi near Lefka region 25 years ago, had left behind 3.5 million tons of mine waste, among them radioactive waste.It also reports that nuclear engineer, Mehmet Ozerkman, together with journalists from KIBRIS went to the mine´s site and using a radiation detector detected ``Selzyum 137''. KIBRIS adds that Selzyum-137 is a health - hazardous element because it emits radiation. Following the warning by the KIBRIS journalists, the so- called minister of health, Gulsen Bozkurt, said that there was no need to worry and that all possible measures were being taken. Nuclear engineer Ozerkman said that if the necessary measures were not taken and the protecting shield made of lead is destroyed and radiation is spread, then ten people out of every hundred might die from bone morrow cancer. KIBRIS reports that Mr. Ozerkman used to work at the CMC site in Karavostasi.
