[01] Eroglu, Akinci comment after signing `coalition protocol´

According to Ankara Anatolia (29.12.98) the center-right National Unity Party (UBP) and the social democrat Communal Liberation Party (TKP) of the occupied northern Cyprus reached an agreement on (29.12.98) to form a ``coalition government.

Dervis Eroglu, the leader of UBP and so-called Prime Minister and Mustafa Akinci, the leader of TKP, signed the protocol for the coalition government during a press conference.

Pointing out that he would present the list of ``cabinet'' to Rauf Denktash on 30 December, Eroglu said that the UBP-TKP coalition would be a ``governemnt'' of performances.

Noting that the protocol had been prepared by taking into consideration the realities on the island, Eroglu said, Turkey and the ``TRNC'' will jointly pursue the national policy of ``TRNC'' and this is the basic principle.

Eroglu stressed that the principle of the UBP and TKP was democracy, transparency and stability.

Mustafa Akinci, the leader of TKP, said for his part that the ``general elections'' held on 6 December led the way for a coalition, stressing, the Turkish Cypriots gave the message that they want to see the TKP in the power. A new period is starting. We will launch efforts to solve the problems of our public''.

The UBP won 24 seats and the TKP won 7 seats in the 50-member "TRNC Parliament" after the "parliamentary elections" on 6 December 1998.
