[01] Turkey claims missing persons died during 1974 coup

According to Anatolia Agency (17:09 hours, 17.12.98) Turkey criticized on Thursday Theodoros Pangalos, the Greek Foreign Minister, who set up a parallelism between Turkish-Greek relations, Cyprus, and the existing problems of Kuwait with Iraq.

A statement from the Turkish Foreign Ministry claimed that Pangalos distorted the history and realities between Turkey and Greece. Alleging that it was the Greek side who tried to unite Cyprus with Greece by use of weapons, the statement claimed ``Turkey intervened militarily to prevent these developements within the framework of her rights stemming from the 1960 guarantee agreement which Greece also signed.''

Alleging that the claim of Pangalos that two thousand persons were kidnapped by Turkey were ``ridiculous'', the statement added, ``The Greek Foriegn Minister intentionally disregards that the main reason of the `missing persons´ problem in Cyprus is Greece´s attempt to annex Cyprus, and the hundreds of Greek Cypriots whom he claimed as missing were in fact the persons who lost their lives at the clashes between the Greek Forces and the Greek Cypriots during the Greek coup in 1974.''

The statement alleged, ``The efforts of Pangalos to bring discord between Turkey and sister Arab countries are just in vain. As he did before, Pangalos tries to organize a crusade against Turkey in a Muslim country.''

[02] Denktash complains to Annan about PKK in the free areas

According to Anatolia Agency (10:26 hours, 17.12.98) Rauf Denktash sent on Wednesday a letter to Kofi Annan, the UN Secretary, and said that the activities of the PKK (Workers Party of Kurdistan) on the Greek Cypriot sdie are worrying.

Denktash said in his letter that the alleged relations between the PKK and the Greek Cypriot side should end, adding that the Greek Cypriot side should prefer to come to an agreement with the pseudostate and accept the confederation proposal.

Denktash also said in his letter that ``Turkish Cypriots are concerned about the increasing activities of the separatist terrorist organization PKK in the Greek Cypriot side after the arrest of Abdullah Ocalan, the chief of the terrorist PKK in Rome''.

Alleging that ``the maternal and spiritual support'', as he put it, of the Greek Cypriot side to the PKK has been known for a long period of time, Denktash claimed that this cooperation has improved recently. Denktash also claimed that nearly all the members of the Kurdish parliament have relations with Greek Cypriot deputies and exchange views with them.

Denktash claimed that Greek Cypriots have recently provoked the terrorists to hold protests at the so-called border, adding that this should end.

[03] Serdar Denktash denies DP ``deputies'' will revive YDP

According to illegal Bayrak radio (16:30 hours, 15.12.98) Democratic Party (DP) leader Serdar Denktash has said that he has no doubts about his party´s 13 ``deputies'', adding: The DP is standing erect.

He was speaking after a meeting with Dervis eroglu, National Unity Party leader and ``prime minister''. Asked to comment on reports that some of the DP ``deputies'' will revive the New Birth Party (Yeni Dogus Partisi, YDP), Serdar Denktash said that the DP won 13 ``seats'' in the ``elections''. He said: ``The 13 deputies know that they were elected by those who believe in the DP and they are very loyal to their party. I can categorically say that the 13 deputies are loyal to each other and to their parties. I have no doubt about that. I do not have anything to say about developments outside that. A new party can be established in this country evey day. So far, some 100 parties were established. In other words, it is easy to set up parties. But if a party is going to be established, those who establish it must first think why they are doing it and for what purpose.''
