[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Turkey, Azerbaidjan said agreed on pipeline constructionA report in YENI SAFAK (25.11.98) says that Turkey is going to begin the construction of the Baku-Ceyhan oil pipeline without waiting for the decision of the Azeri oil consortium (AIOC). Turkey, which has stepped up the work on the pipeline, is said to have given a guarantee to Azerbaidjan early this month that it would build the pipeline on its own.In an effort to enhance the profitability of the pipeline, Turkey has been making intensive efforts to also add the Kazakh oil to the Baku -Ceyhan pipeline. It has been learned that soon after Azeri President Aliyev´s visit to Turkey to attend the celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of the Turkish Republic, an Azeri delegation went to Istanbul for talks with a Turkish delegation. That meeting finalized the efforts for the construction of the pipeline. The two presidents (Suleyman Demirel and Heydar Aliyev) will meet at the end of November to sign an agreement envisaging the start of the construction work. At this (Istanbul) meeting, Turkey also undertook to construct the pipeline on its own. Turkey also stated that it may also construct the Azeri section of the pipeline. [02] Yilmaz submits government resignation to DemirelAccording to Anatolia Agency (17:52 hours, 25.11.98), Turkish President Suleyman Demirel met with Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz and Yilmaz presented Demirel the 55th Government´s resignation.Demirel asked Yilmaz that the Council of Ministers continue its duties until a new government is formed. [03] Turkish Assembly accepts censure motion against minister TanerAccording to TRT 13:25 hours, 25.11.98), the results of censure motion against State Minister Gunes Taner were as follows:The number of votes cast is 530. The number of votes cast in favour of the censure motion is 315 and those cast against is 214. There was one abstention. According to these results, in line with paragraph five of article 93 of the Turkish Constitution, State Minister Gunes Taner has been removed from office with a simple majority. [04] North Iraq meeting scheduled for November canceledAccording to Anatolia Agency (15:20 hours, 25.11.98) the preliminary meeting, which was planned to be held at the end of November with the participation of representatives from Turkey, the United States, Britain, the Iraqi Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (IPUK, and the Iraqi Kurdish Democratic Party (IKDP) with the aim of reviving the Ankara Peace Process, has been canceled.A Turkish Foreign Ministry official said that the meeting to be held in a bid to revive the Ankara Process has been canceled, adding that in the wake of the capture in Rome of Abdullah Ocalan the issue is, form the time being, not on the agenda. Issues concerning the parties involved and especially Turkey´s security concerns were expected to be discussed at the five-sided meeting. [05] Denktash to support his son´s partyAccording to KIBRIS (25.11.98) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has declared that on the 6 December so-called elections he will vote for his son´s party, the Democratic Party.Denktash made this statement while visiting the offices of the local daily ``HALKIN SESI''. When asked by the journalists whom he will support during the so-called general elections, Denktash said ``There is my son´s party. There are people whom I trust, who struggle far a cause, who I believe in. There are people in the other nationalist party who struggle for the cause who I also believe in. Should I tell lies by saying that I am independent and that have no attachment? Naturally I will support my son´s party. How I will support him? By casting my vote in his favour. I ask you not to bother me every now and then. I am a human being too and I have my views as well. If my son has a party that supports my views, then I don´t need to tell this, naturally I will support him, and I am supporting him. Let everyone support his party.'' Denktash went on and said that on the 6th December ``elections'' the nationalist wing that believes in the ``state'' should emerge strong. ``Again a coalition between a party that serves the national cause and a party that is on the same path will be considered'' Denktash said. Denktash also expressed regret that he did not support his late son Raif Denktash in his political struggle. (MY) [06] Journalists Union supports Turkey´s stance on OcalanAccording to KIBRIS (25.11.98) the Chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Journalists Union, Ozgul Gurkut Mutluyakah, has declared that ``Italy has to think about the 30 thousand innocent people killed by the PKK, and accordingly, extradite Ocalan to Turkey''.In a written statement Mutluhakali also criticized the attacks against the Turkish Journalists in Italy while performing their duties. ``These attacks is a negative point for Italian democracy''. Supporting the reaction demonstrated by the Turkish people in Turkey, Ozgul Gurkut Mutluyakali declared that they want to believe that Italy will not be a country supporting terrorism. (MY) [07] Unemployment in the occupied areaKIBRIS (25.11.98) reports that according to ``official figures'', unemployment in the occupied area is 5.61% but it adds that actually this figure is much higher due to the ``unregistered unemployment''. KIBRIS says that unemployment is one of the major reasons for emigration in the occupied area. The paper reports that in the occupied area 52.8% (105,978) of the total population of 200,587 are male and 47.2 (94.609) are female.KIBRIS says that in the occupied area there are 166,049 people who are economically active, 72% of which is male and 28% is female. Out of this figure only 68,668 people are employed, that is only 41.35%, and 9,312, that is 5.61%, is unemployed. Quoting the so-called State Planning Organization KIBRIS says that among the unemployed people 66% is male and 34% is female. KIBRIS says that people in the street, commenting on the results, expressed the view that the biggest problem in the occupied area is unemployment.
