[01] Turkish transportation minister meets Denktash

According to Anatolia Agency 13:48 hours, 9.11.98) Rauf Denktash met on Monday with Arif Ahmet Denizolgun, the Turkish Minister of Transportation, who went to the pseudostate to hold contacts.

Denizolgun said that the Ministry of Transportation has investments in the occupied area, stressing that communication should be provided with satellite system in the pseudostate and this will be realized in a short period of time.

Noting that the ports of occupied Kyrenia and Famagusta will be repaired, Denizolgun stated that also new fishing shelters will be constructed.

Moreover, addressing a statement at Ataturk Airport before his departure from Istanbul (Anatolia, 10:33 hours, 9.11.98) Denizolgun had also stated that there are two airports in the pseudostate, one is military and the other is civilian, adding that Lefkoniko military airport can“t be used in full capacity for three years except in extraordinary situations.

Denizolgun stated that the deficiencies of the occupied Lefkoniko military airport and occupied Tymbou airport will be overcome as soon as possible.

    [02] Akinci announces election platform

According to illegal Bayrak radio (11:30 hours, 9.11.98) Communal Liberation Party (TKP) leader Mustafa Akinci held a new conference to announce his party“s election platform. In the ``general elections'' to be held on 6 December, the TKP will use the slogan ``We will succeed together'', and ``The future belongs to clean hands''.

Akinci expounded on the TKP views with regard to the Cyprus issue, foreign policy, democracy, economy, education, culture, art, health, agriculture, livestock breeding, industry, commerce, tourism, and housing.

Akinci claimed that the Democratic Party (DP)- Republican Turkish Party and the National Unity Party-DP ``coalition governments'' of the past five years demonstrated ways of how not to govern, adding that this was a chaotic period of continuous bickering in which ``coalitions'' displayed less than minimum respect for one another. Inconsistent policies, partisanship, high cost of living, and immigration are only a few of the negative characteristics of this period, Akinci remarked. He said that his party advocates a serious administration that will primarily restore the trust in the ``state''.

Akinci stressed that the TKP concept of working for a solution in the Cyprus issue without postponing all the internal problems until after a Cyprus solution offers a new alternative to the Turkish Cypriots. Akinci added that it appears that the ``elections'' will produce a ``coalition government'', and the TKP will occupy the key position in a future ``coalition''.

The TKP ``election declaration'' announced by Akinci stated that the establishment of a lasting peace in Cyprus will benefit all the interested sides. A reasonable solution in Cyprus consists of a bizonal and bicommunal federation based on political equality and the Set of Ideas, incorporating Turkey“s effective guarantee, the declaration noted.

According to the declaration, the development of Turkish-EU and Turkish- Greek relations will contribute to the solution of the Cyprus issue. The declaration noted that, aided by Turkey, the ``TRNC'' will continue its efforts to acquire a respectable place in the world. The declaration said that the ``TRNC'' must introduce its own ``currency'' if it wants to succeed in the economic sphere.

[03] Turkish Cypriots deny link to immigrant ship in Italy

According to Anatolia Agency (13:56 hours, 9.11.98), Mehmet Bayram, the so-called minister of public works and transportation of the pseudostate, said on Monday that they don`t have any information about a vessel namely ``Zeynep'', which carried illegal immigrants to Italy, to prove that she was a ``TRNC''-flagged ship.

Speaking to reporters, Bayram said that the news published in the Turkish Cypriot press about the issue were only claims and there was not an ``official evidence''.

Bayram stated that they will make researches if they receive an official information.

Enver Yetkili, the so-called general director of the ``TRNC Seaports Administration'', said that the vessel, which was seized near the Italian shores while she was carrying illegal immigrants, didn`t have a registration at the ``TRNC Seaports Ądministration''.

Yetkili said that they got information showing that ``Zeynep'' was a Syrian- flagged ship.

    [04] Water balloon takes seawater

According to AVRUPA (7.11.98), the dream to turn the occupied Mesaoria valley into another ``Harran'' (arid agricultural area in southeast Turkey being irrigated from water diverted from major dams) was stillborn. Analysis showed that the water balloon that arrived in the occupied area a week ago was full of seawater. A subsequent study revealed a tear on the balloon developed during the towing operation. A similar tear that developed during a previous towing operation was sewn and repaired.

Noting that water is being transported in balloons between 25 islands in Scandinavia, where the water is usually calm, hydraulic engineering circles have stressed that water cannot be transported in balloons over high seas and for a distance of 40 nautical miles.

Therefore, these circles point out that the project to carry water in balloons is not feasible. Also indicating that it is impossible to pump water into an undersea pipeline, these same circles point out that no firm has guaranteed the construction of this project and that is why pipe production has not started. Noting that transporting water through undersea pipelines has not been tried before, these circles assert that this project too would probably not work.

The bankruptcy of the false hopes raised among the population of the occupied area by the politicians without any proper prior investigation is seen as a major scandal.
