[01] YILMAZ THREATENS OVER EU TALKS

All turkish cypriot newspapers (4.11.98) refer to Yilmaz's one-day visit to the occupied area. KIBRIS refers to the "warning" Yilmaz made during his visit and stresses its importance. Yilmaz, addressing the Greek Cypriots, said: "My advice is to turn back, the soonest possible, from the dangerous path you are following. Turkey will never allow the slightest threat against the Turkish people. There is proof of Turkey's determination in the past." He added that the only option is for the existing problems to be solved between "two states".

He threatened that Cyprus' accession to the EU "would deepen the split between the two communities" and added: "We want to warn EU member states that such an application is not acceptable unless the Cyprus problem is solved first".

[02] DENKTASH ON TURKISH CYPRIOT "SOVEREIGNTY"

According to VATAN (4/11/98), after the so-called council of ministers' meeting yesterday, with the participation of Turkish Prime Minister, Mesut Yilmaz, speaking to reporters Rauf Denktash thanked Yilmaz and Turkey in general for their support to the Turkish Cypriot community. "It is unacceptable for Europe to put conditions to our sovereignty", Denktash claimed. "We use our sovereignty to protect our rights and not to destroy the other side".

In reply to a relevant question, he said he did not know whether Israeli President Ezer Weizman is acting as a mediator in the Cyprus problem.
