    [01] Denktash proposes non-aggression pact

According to Turkish Daily News (22.10.98), Rauf Denktash has called on the Cyprus Government to sign a non-aggression pact between the two sides.

In addition to the proposal for a non-aggression pact, Denktash also proposed a meeting ``between the two interior ministers'' to outline measures to make it easier for tourists to cross the ``border'' between the two sides, the Anatolia news agency reported.

He called on the United Nations to contribute to his efforts on these proposals.

[02] Madden says ``hypothetical and speculative the news of Denktash´s possible arrest in Britain''

According to KIBRIS (23.10.98) British High Commissioner to Cyprus David Madden had a meeting yesterday with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

After the meeting Madden told the journalists that the news that Denktash could be arrested in Britain if the Cyprus government demands it is ``hypothetical and speculative statements''.

``I have told this to Mr. Denktash. I want a speedy clarification on this issue. The Home Office Spokesman, referring to the Pinochet case, did not answer any specific question regarding Mr. Denktash. Speaking generally regarding the Pinochet issue the Spokesman made clarification and answered questions of a speculative nature on what would be the procedure to be followed, and while answering this question he never mentioned Denktash´s name'', Madden said.

Referring to Dame Ann Hercus´s shuttle talks, he said that his government fully supports Dame Hercus´s efforts. (MY)

    [04] Kurd abducted and tortured

According to YENIDUZEN (23.10.98), Muharrem Kaya, a Kurd of the Alevite sect living in occupied Morphou, was abducted from his home by two armed people, tortured and then set free.

Kaya held a press conference yesterday and told how he was abducted and tortured. He said that his abductors were talking perfect Turkish and not in Turkish Cypriot dialect.

Kaya said that for some time now he has been receiving threats from fascist idealists. ``I am receiving threats because I am a Kurd and Alevite. Before the last attack on Tuesday, I had received two threatening letters. I conveyed the originals of these letters to the police'' he said. He said that he has been in the occupied area since May 1995 operating a Turkish pizza house in occupied Morphou. He said that in the threatening letters he was asked to leave the occupied area because of his ethnic origin and religious belief.

He said that he was tortured with a piece of metal and a pincer .

Speaking at the press conference, Patriotic Unity Movement ``deputy'' Ozker Ozgur warned that the fascist threat was ever increasing in the occupied area. He said that fascists are getting organized before the very eyes of the so-called police force. (MY)

[05] New water well in occupied Kythrea

According to KIBRIS (23.10.98) a new potable water well has been opened in occupied Kythrea which will supply water for ten settlements in the area.
