    [01] Demirel refers to Cyprus

According to Hurriyet (internet version) 4/8/98, Turkey´s President Suleyman Demirel asked to give his reaction to the Parliament´s decision regarding early elections, stated inter alia, that he had asked Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz not to suspend the agenda. The fact, he said, that the Prime Minister will not be in his seat and that the elections will be held after nine months should not hinder the major projects undertaken in Turkey. According to Hurriyet, Cyprus is included in the list of the important issues raised by Demirel. The reference on Cyprus has as follows:

``Early elections should not affect the decisions we made regarding Cyprus. The project for carrying water in balloons should be carried out and the project for carrying water through pipe lines should come into life''.

    [02] Denktash meets foreign Diplomats

According to Halkin Sesi (6/8/98) the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr Rauf Denktash yesterday had an hour´s meeting with Ms Deborah Graze, Charge d´Affaires of the United States of America in Nicosia with whom he discussed the latest Cyprus developments.

After the meeting the American diplomat said that Ambassador Kenneth Brill who is currently on holiday abroad returns on Saturday and will resume his activity on the Cyprus problem.

Denktash also met Pietro Sambi, Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See with whom he exchanged views on developments.

[03] Akinci meets Italian and Slovak Ambassadors

Communal Liberation leader Mr. Mustafa Akinci met yesterday with the Ambassadors of Italy and the Slovak Republic in Cyprus with whom he discussed current developments in the Cyprus Problem

[04] Chizov: Tension not due to S-300 missiles

According to Turkish Daily News (5/8/98) Russia´s special envoy Vladimir Chizov said on Tuesday that the persisting tension on Cyprus was not due to the Russian -made S-300 missiles.

Speaking after a meeting with Rauf Denktash Chizov stated that it was not the missile deal between Russia and Cyprus but other factors that were behind the tension between the two Cypriot sides according to the Anatolia news agency.

Denktash for his part claimed that: ``The Greek Cypriots see themselves as the sole sovereigns of the island. Their insistence on this is the main reason behind the impossibility of resuming the talks. The missiles are also a part of their intransigent position''. Denktash also added that ``if Moscow really wants a solution on Cyprus it should treat the two sides equally, particularly in the U.N Security Council, where it holds a permanent seat''.

    [05] Agricultural support for pseudostate

Turkish Agriculture Minister Mustafa Tasar said that Turkey would continue its support for the ``TRNC'' agricultural development and said that a previously signed ``bilateral protocol'' on agricultural cooperation should be updated.

Tasar received his so called counterpart Kenan Akin in Ankara, and the two discussed options for further improving and accelerating the development of the ``TRNC'' agricultural sector. Tasar said that Turkey´s assistance would extend to instances of natural disasters in which case Turkish Cypriots would receive subsidies equal to those granted to Turkish farmers. Akin, for his part, said that Turkish Cypriot agriculturists needed support particularly in gaining access to European markets and procuring cheaper start-up materials and equipment as well as chemical fertilizers.
