  • [01] Denktash, Eroglu assess election results

According to illegal Bayrak radio (9.2.98) Rauf Denktash has reiterated his claim that there will not be any change in the Cyprus policy of the Greek Cypriot leadership in the wake of the presidential elections in the south. Dervis Eroglu, in turn, also declared that no matter who is elected, there will not be a change in the policy of the Greek Cypriots.

Denktash met with Eroglu and Serdar Denktash for their weekly routine meeting this morning. Taner Etkin, also attended the meeting. The presidential elections in Cyprus and the countermeasures to be adopted against the British visa requirement imposed on Turkish Cypriots were assessed during the meeting.

Recalling that Clerides and Iacovou were tied in the first round of elections held in Cyprus last Sunday, Denktash remarked that the fate of the second round to be held on 15 February will be determined by Lyssarides.

Denktash explained that it is impossible to choose between the two camps at present, and said: "We will see the choice that Lyssarides will make".

Asked if the Turkish Cypriot side received a sign for a new negotiating process, Denktash claimed that there are no more grounds for face-to-face negotiations. He expressed the belief that UN representatives will contact the Turkish Cypriots in order to create such grounds. Denktash reiterated the demand that everyone renounce the "mistake" of recognizing one of the sides as the state and government.

In his statement after the weekly routine meeting, Eroglu explained that elections in the south were particularly assessed during the meeting. Noting that Clerides and Iacovou will vie for the post of president in the second round and Lyssarides will carry great weight in this second round, Eroglu said that Lyssarides' views on the Cyprus issue are well known. He declared: "No matter who is elected, the Greek Cypriots' policy on Cyprus will not change. It is certain that the person who will be supported by Lyssarides, a staunch hard-liner, will continue to adopt an intransigent attitude."

The determination to announce the Turkish Cypriots' current policy to the world was underlined during the meeting, Eroglu explained. He revealed that they will take countermeasures against the visa requirement imposed by Britain. Eroglu said that a "draft" was drawn up in this regard.

Eroglu announced that the "general elections" slated for December may be held in the first half of November. He said that an agreement was reached between the "coalition" partners, the National Unity Party (UBP) and the Democratic Party, on holding the "general elections" in November. The final decision, however, will be made by the party assemblies of the two parties, he stressed. Eroglu said that a meeting of the UBP Press Council will be called in the coming days. The "local elections" will be evaluated and a final date will be set for "general elections" during the meeting, he added.
