[01] Denktash claims visa countermeasures not to harm Turks
According to illegal Bayrak radio (16:30 hours, 3.2.98), Turkish Cypriot
leader Rauf Denktash has claimed that the measures to be adopted by the
pseudostate in reaction to the British visa requirement will be arranged in
a way that will not be harmful to Turkish Cypriots living in Britain.
Following his meeting with the US Ambassador to Nicosia last Tuesday
Denktash made a statement to illegal BRT (Bayrak Radio and Television) and
illegal TAK in connection with the visa issue.
Pointing out that the measures to be adopted in reaction to Britain's visa
requirement will not result in losses for the "TRNC", Denktash explained
that it is possible that incoming tourists will not be charged visa fees.
Denktash also explained that the measures will not entail any difficulties
for "TRNC citizens" living in Britain upon entry.

According to illegal Bayrak radio (16:30 hours, 3.2.98) Communal Liberation
Party (TKP) leader Mustafa Akinci has charged that the move to introduce a
visa requirement on British citizens in reaction to the visa imposed on
Tukrish Cypriots is tantamount to a self-imposed embargo.
In a written statement on the subject, Akinci remarked that ideas that are
raised without due deliberation will either not be implemented, or they
will carry the risk of causing damage when implemented. Akinci remarked
that in opposing the British visa requirement, one must be careful and cool
in assessing the conditions that lead to immigration and requests for
asylum. He stressed the importance of adopting those measures that will
eliminate these conditions and of expanding employment opportunities.
Akinci added that no only should they refrain from imposing a visa on
British citizens, they should actually adopt measures that will facilitate
arrivals to the occupied area from Britain as well as from other part of
the world.
