  • [A] NEWS ITEMS

[01] Demirel claims the world should realize the fact that "two states" exist in Cyprus

According to Turkish Daily News (8.12.97, Internet version), Turkish President Suleyman Demirel stated that Turkey, as a guarantor state, "would always stand up against efforts to disturb peace in Cyprus", the Anatolia news agency reported.

A "Cypriot Turkish Development Platform (KTKP)" meeting was held in the Turkish Union of Chambers and Stock Exchanges (TOBB) conference hall in Istanbul. Many bureaucrats, private sector representatives, politicians, association representatives and academics attended the meeting.

In the message he sent to the meeting, President Demirel claimed that the world should realize the fact that "two states" exist on Cyprus. Demirel stated that Turkey would make every effort to provide the "TRNC" with an economic structure that would allow it to stand on its own feet.

[02] Denktash complains of Arab World's "injustice" against Turkish Cypriots

According to TRT (18:00 hours, 8.12.97) Rauf Denktash reproached the Arab countries which are criticizing Turkish-Israeli relations. "You have established very close relations with the Greek Cypriots, who are trying to eradicate the Turkish Cypriots in Cyprus. If there is an injustice, this is where the injustice lies," he claimed.

In his statement at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport on his way to Tehran, he complained that the OIC meetings, which the Turkish Cypriots have attended as observers for years, never yielded the expected results. Denktash continued: "I regret to say that for years the Arab and Islamic world forgot about the Turkish Cypriots."

"I would like to say the following to all those who say that nobody should establish relations with Israel: You have very close relations with the Greek Cypriots, who for years have been trying to eradicate the Turkish Cypriots in Cyprus. You have established very favourable economic relations with the Greek Cypriots. You have been pursuing these relations without even contacting the Turkish Cypriots. If an injustice has been committed, this is where it lies,", he claimed.

[03] Denktash to attend OIC summit

According to illegal Bayrak radio (6:00 hours, 8.12.97) Rauf Denktash left Cyprus for Istanbul yesterday morning on his way to Tehran where he will attend the eighth summit of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC). Denktash will address the summit. He will be accompanied by "political affairs director" Mustafa Evran and Dr. Sait Kenan during his visit to Tehran. He will return to Cyprus on Friday, 12 December, together with Taner Etkin, "minister of foreign affairs and defense" who is currently in Tehran.

[04] Ecevit reelected Democratic Left Party leader

According to TRT (1800 hours, 7/12/97) the fourth congress of the Democratic Left Party (DSP) was held last Sunday and Istanbul Deputy Bulent Ecevit, the sole candidate, received all of the 916 valid votes and was reelected party leader.

In an opening address at the congress, Ecevit said that the 55th government is tackling the accumulated problems of the country with determination and taking brave steps. Ecevit underlined the importance of unraveling the network of sinister relations that erode the state mechanism and the community from inside. It is imperative, he said, to restrict parliamentarian immunities and to broaden judicial independence.

In his speech, Ecevit said that it is Turkey's inalienable right and aim to become a full EU member. He referred to the remarks by the late statesman Ismet Inonu who had said: A new world will be created and Turkey will find its place in it.

"Today, that prophecy is coming to pass. A new world is being created, but Europe has not been able to grasp that completely. And Turkey is playing an increasingly decisive role in that point in that world where the East and the West, Europe and Asia, meet. On the other hand, it is deepening its relations with the United States. Certain European states that are trying to close their doors to Turkey today will one day realize this development and Turkey's unique place in that development. When that day comes, they will inevitably knock on Turkey's door to invite us to their midst," he said.

[05] Etkin: "TRNC determined to become full member of OIC"

Taner Etkin, so-called minister of foreign affairs and defense, has said that the pseudostate wants to become a full member of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC). In a statement to Anatolia News Agency in Tehran, where he is currently for the OIC foreign ministers' meeting, Etkin said that the "TRNC" is attending the OIC meeting as an observer but is determined to become a full member.

He claimed that the pseudostate has reached the point of political recognition and expects more powerful and concrete solidarity, aid, and cooperation in this regard.

[06] Pseudostate gypsies complain of discrimination

According to KIBRIS (9.12.97) the occupation regime is refusing permission to "Gurbets" (name given to gypsies by Turkish Cypriots) to go to the UK.

The so-callled Turkish Cypriot Airlines claimed that they are refusing to fly those people who are unable to produce a UK visa. They say that British emigration officials are imposing a fine of 2000 pounds sterling on the company for each passenger who asks for political asylum in the UK. They added that if the gurbets produce a UK visa, they will then fly them to the UK. On the other hand, gypsies who are refused to be flown to London have complained that they are being discriminated, that they are "citizens" of the pseudostate and that they are being remembered only when the time comes for military service and for paying taxes.
