[01] Turkish Cypriot poll on politicians

According to a report in KIBRIS (27.11.97), the poll conducted recently by COMAR in the ocucpied area showed that 92.5 percent of the "citizens" favour the replacement of the existing politicians with new names. This is how they view the politicians:
    1. They do not make an effort to understand each other (61.4 percent).
    2. Their personal interests supersede the communal interests (61.3 percent).
    3. They are unconcerned with the people's problems (61.3 percent)
    4. They do not represent the people who have empowered them (56.1 percent).
    5. They lack sufficient knowledge in their own fields (55.5 percent).
    6. They do not keep their promises (55.1 percent).

Interesting results are emerging from the poll conducted for the newspaper KIBRIS by COMAR, which is the only polling company operating in the pseudostate.

According to the outcome of the poll, the people want to see new faces in politics.

All the sectors of the Turkish Cypriot community overwhelmingly hold a negative view of the politicians and their performance.

Most of the "citizens" did not approve of the "positive" terms used for the politicians by COMAR and instead preferred to express negative views about the politicians.

[02] Denktash claims recognition imperative for EU membership

According to illegal Bayrak radio (11:30 hours, 4.12.97) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has claimed that it is imperative for the pseudostate to be recognized if the whole of Cyprus is to become an EU member, and added: "Otherwise, the division in Cyprus will become permanent". The second "international tourism conference" organized by the so-called Kyrenia American University started yesterday. Twenty researches and scientists from seven countries will submit papers to the conference, which will last for three days.

Addressing the opening session of the conference, Denktash said that he will benefit from the useful discussions to be held by those attending the conference.

Denktash continued claiming: "The Greek Cypriot side, which claims that it is the sole government of Cyprus, is against visits to the TRNC and tries to put obstacles along these lines.

However, tourist agencies all over the world have discovered the TRNC and all the tourists who visit the TRNC return to their countries satisfied with their vacation and the hospitality they receive."

Stating that tourists should be free to cross over into any side they want in Cyprus, Denktash continued: "This problem will be resolved; however, it will take some time because of the political issues with the Greek Cypriots. Until that time, the TRNC should develop its own tourism potential".

[03] Joint Turkish-Israeli-US maneuvers scheduled for January

According to illegal Bayrak radio (11:30 hours, 4.12.97) the joint Turkish- Israeli-US maneuvers are slated to be held in January. Israeli Defense Minister Yizhaq Mordekhay will pay a visit to Turkey on 8 Decemebr to discuss the details of the issue with Turkish commanders. The maneuvers will be held in the Mediterranean.
