[01] Paper reports Holbrooke knocks against `Denktash Barrier'

"Holbrooke, the paper adds, tried to create a confrontation between Denktash and Ankara during the talks he had with him for one and a half hours. Furthermore, he tried to put pressure on Denktash.

ZAMAN also reports that Holbrooke's proposal that "the Turkish side may participate in the talks the EU will have with the Greek Cypriots without insisting on its flag" has been viewed as a very "inexperienced" approach. A political observer has said: "Richard Holbrooke, who lives in a dream world, has badly knocked against the Denktash barrier in Washington."

[02] French Minister: Turkey is not an EU candidate like others

"France did not propose that Turkey be considered as a candidate like the other countries, because it has specific problems such as human rights, the Cyprus problem and the Kurdish question," said Minister Pierre Moscovici during a program on Radio France International. "There is progress to be made, Turkey is not a candidate like the others."

But the minister said that France hoped Turkey will be included in the European Conference, since the country's European vocation had been apparent for 34 years. "Therefore, there will be 15 European Union members and 10 candidates plus Turkey, which will have a particular status", he said.

Moscovici's remarks mark the first time that a French official has said that Turkey was "not like the other candidates" and would have a particular status in the European Conference, which is a French proposal that aims to bring together "aspiring members and countries linked to the Union with an accord" on a regular basis. The minister did not speculate on the definition of "particular status".
