[01] Pseudostate businessmen feel need for own currency

According to HALKIN SESI (21.10.97) the "Consumers Association" has indicated that the pseudostate needs to have its own currency unit.

Chairman Hasan Isik stated that the real reason behind the economic deadlock in the "TRNC" is the fact that it does not have its own currency unit, and that it will not achieve economic development before printing its own currency, adding: "To be the owners of an independent and sovereign state that determines its own fate, all our country's establishments should inevitably support the printing of the state's own currency."

Isik proposed that the "TRNC" currency unit be indexed to a stable monetary unit.

    [02] Denktash leaves for USA

According to KIBRIS (22.10.97) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash is to leave the occupied area for USA, via Istanbul.

He will be leaving the occupied area this evening with his wife and the so- called foreign ministry political affairs director Namik Korhan.

[03] Pseudostate "Minister" suggests doubling "TRNC" population through further immigration from Turkey

According to CUMHURIYET (22.10.97) the so-called Minister of Finance of the pseudostate, Salih Cosar, has alleged that through immigration the Greek Cypriots have increased their population to 700 thousand, and he suggested that it is a must to double the population of the occupied area through organized immigration from Turkey, mainly from the Black Sea regions. He said that the Turkish side has no definite policy on this issue.

Speaking to the members of the Trabzon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Cosar said that population issue is creating serious problems. He claimed that once the population issue is solved, the Cyprus problem will be solved by itself.

Cosar said that Turkey did not take the necessary measures, which would ensure that the occupied area's mission will last. He said that until now they have concluded 17 protocols with Turkey and despite this the problem is yet to be solved.

Cosar also demanded freedom of movement between Turkey and the occupied area similar to the arrangement existing among the EU member states.
