[01] Denktash faults EU portraying Turkish Cypriots as minority
According to illegal Bayrak radio (15:30 hours, 16.9.97) Rauf Denktash has
claimed that the EU, despite the complaints filed by the Turkish Cypriot
side, is taking measures to implement the decisions it has reached on the
Cyprus issue without listening to the Turkish Cypriot side.
In a statement Denktash referred to the issues of EU and Cyprus. He said
that the EU is persistently trying to portray the Turkish Cypriot side as a
minority within the Greek Cypriot republic which it views as the legitimate
Cyprus Republic. He added that only the positive aspects of the EU are
therefore being explained. Noting that the "TRNC" is recognized by Turkey
alone, Denktash said: "This is more than enough for us. Some day the
world will certainly recognize the independence of the TRNC".
[02] Mehmet Ali Talat wants to be part of EU accession negotiations
According to KIBRIS (17.9.97), in the framework of his various contacts in
Europe, Mehmet Ali Talat, leader of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP), had
a meeting in London with British Labour Party general secretary, Mr. Dick
Sigler, who is in charge of socialist affairs.
The paper publishes quotes from a Labour Party Press Release dated 11
September 1997 where it is written that German Social Democrat Mechtild
Rothe, Vice-chairwoman of the EU-Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee, at
the end of a three-day visit by Mr. Talat to Brussels said that "Mehmet Ali
Talat has made clear that he stands for a federal system in Cyprus, for a
single sovereignty under the leadership of a Greek Cypriot President and
a Turkish Cypriot vice-President". Also that "Mehmet Ali Talat and his
party are prepared to participate in active negotiations for Cyprus
membership of the EU under Greek leadership but with equal participation of
the Turkish community. Talat has made clear that he hopes, as we do, that
the negotiations will be a constructive contribution to a peaceful solution
of the Cyprus problem."
