[01] Sukru Gurel: Turkey ready to proceed to the integration in case of
EU-Cyprus negotiations
According to "ORTAM" (15.8.97), Turkish Minister of State Sukru Gurel
stated in Parliament that Turkey is ready for the integration with the so-
called "TRNC" in case the European Union proceeds to the negotiations with
the Cyprus Government.
He also added that Turkey should not abandon the Turkish Cypriots and that
they should be supported so as to be economically strong. (LL)
[02] Rauf Denktash on the assassination of Necip
According to KIBRIS (17.8.97) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, in
reply to questions by journalists in Istanbul concerning the assassination
of Can Necip, said: "I hope he was not killed because he was a Turk. But
if this is the case, then it is a terrorist act." (LL)
[03] Denktash on the Montreaux talks
According to the English speaking Turkish Cypriot newspaper "Cyprus Today"
(16.8.97) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash commenting on the Montreux
talks, said that: "I think we all knew in a few meetings that the solution
would not appear" and added: "We have to wait until the end of the year to
see what the EU decides to do with Cyprus".
Furthermore the Turkish Cypriot leader said: "Cyprus is not a Greek
republic. Greek Cypriots have no right under the rule of law to represent
the whole island. The European Union, the champion of human rights,
disregards all these things." (LL)
