    [01] Inal Batu in Cyprus to consult with Turkish Cypriot leadership

    According to KIBRIS (1.7.97) Turkish Foreign Ministry deputy Under- secretary responsible for the Cyprus-Greece desk, Ambassador Inal Batu, is to arrive in the occupied area today to have working meetings with the Turkish Cypriot leadership on the eve of the New York talks.

    The first working meeting will be held at 10am tomorrow at Denktash's office.

    After a lunch-break it will be resumed at 15:00.

    Batu will return to Turkey on Thursday. (MY)

    [02] New Turkish State Minister for Cyprus affairs

    According to KIBRIS (1.7.97) Prof. Sukru Sina Gurel, of the Democratic Left Party of Bulent Ecevit, has been appointed as the new State Minister Responsible for Cyprus Affairs.

    Born in Smyrna in 1950, Prof. Gurel holds an international relations doctorate degree from Ankara University's Political Sciences Faculty.

    He was until now the Head of the Department of International Relations of the Political Sciences Faculty of Ankara University.

    He is married with two children. He speaks English and French.

    [03] Atun returns from Brussels

    According to illegal Bayrak radio (15:30 hours, 29.6.97) so-called Assembly "speaker" Atun has said that the world is beginning to understand the Turkish Cypriots due to their determination and their just demands.

    Atun returned from Brussels where he held contacts at the European Parliament (EP). He followed the EP summer meetings and held contacts with certain officials in Brussels.

    On his contacts, Atun said this was the first time the Turkish Cypriots were visiting the Council of Europe (COE) and this is of historical importance. He pointed out that after the United Nations, the COE also became involved in the Cyprus question, and appointed an ambassador to this end. Therefore, he stressed, contacts with this organization are important. "The visit was beneficial, and we are better understood now due to our determination and out just demands", he claimed.

    Atun noted that In Brussels, he met with Ozer Koray, so-called TRNC representative, Uluc Ozulker, Turkish ambassador to the EU, and Guner Ozkok, Turkish ambassador to Brussels. He added that they discussed the Cyprus problem in detail.

    Atun also said that he had the opportunity to meet the COE Cyprus rapporteur, the chairman of the EP Socialist Group, and certain other officials, with whom he discussed the EU's role in the Cyprus problem. Atun pointed out that in general the voice of the Turkish Cypriots is not sufficiently heard at the EU. He stressed that the Turkish Cypriots must hold such contacts more frequently and be more prepared for them.

    [04] Pseudo-Assembly to discuss latest developments

    According to KIBRIS (1.7.97) the pseudo-Assembly is to convene at an extraordinary session today to evaluate the latest developments in the Cyprus problem.

    Denktash will attend the session and will brief the "Assembly". (MY)
