[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Turkish Cypriots claim Foreign Minister Kasoulides not serious about demilitarizationAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (10:30 hours, 10.6.97) Namik Korhan, the so-called Washington representative of the pseudostate, has claimed that the Cyprus Government is not serious about the issue of the island's demilitarization. In response to statements made by Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides during his visit to the United States, Korhan claimed: "Kasoulides cannot possibly be serious about the issue of demilitarization when his administration is the one that signed an agreement with Russia for the purchase of S-300 missiles and is spending $3 million daily for arms".In his statement, Korhan reiterated that the Turkish Cypriot side considers the issue of the island's demilitarization a long-term goal and congruent with a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus issue. Recalling that the demilitarization of the island was a formula included in the Boutros-Ghali Set of Ideas, Korhan said: "Within this framework, it is imperative that the security guarantees on the island not be upset." Korhan added: "The Greek Cypriot side should pay more attention to the direct talks scheduled to take place between the leaders of the two communities in July." [02] First $50 million of $250 million Turkish loan transferred to the occupied areaAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (3:00 hours, 10.6.97) an amount of $50 million has been transferred to the pseudostate as the first part of the $250 million loan to be extended to the "TRNC" within the framework of the economic cooperation "protocol" signed with Turkey.According to a statement issued by "Finance Minister" Salih Cosar, a credit "protocol" will be signed with Turkey for the $50 million, which was deposited in the Ziraat Bank and is earmarked for the "TRNC". In his statement, Cosar said this credit will be transferred to the needy areas of the economy in line with predetermined plans and programs. [03] Denktash insists on recognitionAccording to KIBRIS (11.6.97) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has declared that for the settlement of the Cyprus problem the Turkish Cypriots' status should be accepted. Denktash further said that in New York he will be sincerely telling to President Clerides to accept Turkish Cypriots' equality, sovereignty, rights and status. Otherwise we will live side by side as good neighbours, he said.Speaking to illegal Bayrak's "Echo" programme, Denktash claimed that there exists common ground for the talks. When asked how long will he wait if nothing is achieved in New York, Denktash said: "As far as I am concerned if nothing is achieved during this round of talks then we have to decide the conditions for sitting around the negotiations table again And these conditions should be:' First you have to recognize us, then we will sit down for negotiations. If you recognize us we will sit around the negotiation table.' Then the issues that we have to discuss will be less. Had we secured this then years ago, the Cyprus problem would have been solved by now. Or the whole world would have seen that there was going to be no agreement and the TRNC would have been recognized. For this reason, if nothing will be achieved during this round, then we have no time for another 34 years to row against the current. We have to tell them, `we are not in this game if you continue to consider the Greeks as the government of Cyprus'. And this will be decided upon by our Assembly."
