[01] Grey Wolves charged over pop star ambush

According to weekly CYPRUS TODAY (7.6.97) fifty-eight members of the ultra- nationalist "Grey Wolves" faction have been charged in connection with the attack on the bus carrying Turkish pop star Burak Kut to last month's UN- sponsored bicommunal concert.

Among those charged are the assistant general secretary of the pseudstate's Unity Sovereignty Party, Delil Akbulut.

The charges brought separately against the 58 include meeting with intent to disturb the peace, congregating with common cause to revolt, disturbing the flow of traffic on the public highways, conspiring to disturb an artistic performance, and causing malicious damage.

The first two charges could require between one and three years' imprisonment.

[02] Atun changes position on the EU membership issue

According to ORTAM (7.6.97) the so-called chairman of the pseudostate's "Assembly" Hakki Atun has said that if a settlement is found in Cyprus on the "two state basis", where each state will not have hegemony over the other, then the EU membership issue can be on the agenda.

ORTAM describes Atun's statement a "U" turn, saying that until now Atun was advocating the view that Cyprus' membership should come after Turkey's membership. .../..

Speaking in Adana, south Turkey, Atun declared that the Turkish Cypriots will not cede the "independence" they acquired through the Turkish invasion and occupation.

He repeated the known Turkish view regarding the EU membership accusing the EU of conducting a "carrot and stick" policy in Cyprus. "If the issue of the Greek Cypriot side's membership is raised, then we will continue our path with Turkey", declared Atun.

[03] Turkish allegation involves Greece and Cyprus in the shooting down of army helicopter in Iraq

According to KIBRIS (7.6.97) the General Secretary of Turkey's General Staff, Major General Erol Ozhasnah, has admitted that the cobra and cougar army helicopter that was shot down over northern Iraq, was shot down by Kurdish guerillas using Russian made surface to air missiles - SA-7B.

He accused six countries, among them Greece and the Cyprus government, of providing these missiles to the Kurdish fighters.

He also alleged that these six countries have also provided training in the use of these missiles to the Kurdish fighters.

[04] Serdar Denktash: aid from Turkey delayed, but will arrive

According to illegal Bayrak radio (15:30 hours, 6.6.97) Serdar Denktash, "state minister and deputy prime minister," has declared that the provisions of the economic cooperation "protocol" signed between Turkey and the pseudostate and the aid to be extended within this framework will be delayed, but they will definitely be implemented.

Denktash returned from a short visit to Turkey. In a statement at occupied Tymbou airport, Denktash said he met with Turkish State Minister Abdullah Gul, who is responsible for Cyprus affairs, and recounted to him the situation in the "TRNC".

Pointing out that efforts are under way to implement the provisions of the "protocol" signed with Turkey, Denktash noted that the aid to be extended within the framework of the "protocol" will be delayed because of the political problems currently experienced in Turkey.

He said: "The economy will not develop the way we want without Turkey's aid. A sector in Turkey wants us to realize that we must render our own resources more productive. We must study how to achieve this. Only then should we expect assistance from Turkey".

[05] "The American Plan for Cyprus"

Fuat Nalcioglu writing in BIRLIK (9.6.97) under the title: "The American Plan is Ready says:

"America is determined to solve the Cyprus problem.

America which is the world's super power has direct interest in all events in the world. Apart from a few, no one is objecting to this. Except the following: Germany, which is competing the USA in world leadership, Russia, and pro-German countries. However, these countries exhibit not direct but indirect opposition that is more geared to be acts of putting obstacles.

America continues to advance on its path which it considers to be right in a determined manner.

    America has a Cyprus settlement plan. According to the American plan the following is envisaged in Cyprus: First, Cyprus will be divided into three main regions;

    1 / Greek Cypriot administration

2 / Turkish Republic of North Cyprus, TRNC

3 / An enlarged buffer zone.

Let us first take the TRNC. Security shall be provided by the Turkish Armed Forces. Sovereignty will be in the hands of the Turkish Cypriot administration. The borders of the TRNC will start from the road in Limnitis, will pass through Karavostassi, Morphou, Katokopia, Skylloura to Nicosia, from there to Tymbou airport and to the new road to be built from Tymbou to Lefkoniko airport. From there on, with a new road which will pass below Trikomo village, it will be joined to the road coming from Famagusta, and from there with the new road being built in Famagusta.

The Greek Cypriot administration's borders will be the present borders and the sovereignty will be exercised by the Greek Cypriot administration.

The region between these two areas will be the extended buffer zone where the US Forces will be deployed. In this area the sovereignty will be exercised by the UN and security will be provided by US troops under NATO's umbrella.

In this region Greeks and Turks will live intermingled, and entry from this region to the Greek and Turkish regions will be free. Turks living in this buffer region will be free to enter the TRNC and the Greek Cypriots to enter south Cyprus. Permission will be needed for a Greek Cypriot to enter into TRNC and for a Turkish Cypriot to enter south Cyprus.

Local and foreign tourists coming to Cyprus either from Airports in the buffer zone or on the edge of the buffer zone will have the freedom to go to the region of their choice. This is an American plan. We will continue describing the details."
