[01] Tourism agreement signed with Turkish Cypriots

Turkey's Tourism Minister Yucel was separately received by Hakki Atun and Dervis Eroglu. He said, he came to the occupied area together with private sector entrepreneurs as they wanted to repeat in the occupied area the success they achieved in Turkey and in the world. He added that Turkey would be pleased to convey its knowledge in the tourist field to the occupied area.

Atun said, they wished that these agreements which they started in the economic field would continue in the tourist field contributing to the development of the occupied area.

[02] Clerides and Denktash `most probably' to meet in New York in June

Anatolia Agency's (AA) New York correspondent reports that Han Sung Ioo, the outgoing UN Secretary-General's special envoy for Cyprus, expressed his views on the Cyprus issue to the UN Security Council members before leaving his post. The report, according to which UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is planning to get Clerides and Denktash together in New York most probably in June, explained that the second and third meeting proposed by Annan would perhaps be held in Cyprus given Denktash's inability to leave the island for a long period due to his health.

[03] Ensarioglu seeks support for Turkish Cypriots at ECO meeting

Turkish State Minister Salim Ensarioglu, who represents his country at the meeting, said that Turkey sees the ECO as a significant cooperation platform aimed at securing regional economic stability. Noting that the aim is to transform the economic cooperation region into one of peace, stability and prosperity, Ensarioglu expressed the hope that the problems in Kashmir, Cyprus, Karabakh, and Albania would be resolved in a just manner as soon as possible. Alleging that the Turkish side is not responsible for the creation of the Cyprus problem, Ensarioglu asked the ECO member countries to support the Turkish Cypriots.

[04] Atun asks US to play `major role' in solution of problem

Atun was speaking to US Pennsylvania Senator Steward Greenleaf. Greenleaf was accompanied by Kenan Umar, a lobbyist in the United States. At the meeting, Atun stressed that the United States had a very major role in the solution of the Cyprus problem, adding: "The United States must play this role".

Atun said that Greenleaf's visit would contribute to the solution of the Cyprus problem. He pointed out that such visits were important in that the realities of Cyprus are witnessed on the spot. Atun expressed the belief that the senator's contribution would serve toward reaching an acceptable solution.

The senator said was hopeful that the Cyprus problem would be resolved peacefully. He noted that the Turks and Greeks living in the United States were in favour of a solution that would enable the two communities to live together.

The senator met with Denktash yesterday.

[05] Denktash warns UK Labour Party against backing Greek Cypriots

Denktash, who is in Canakkale, Dardanelles as guest of the 18 March University. In reply to a journalist's comment that a Labour Party government would openly support the Greek Cypriot side, Denktash said: "Britain cannot sacrifice Turkey's friendship. Britain cannot give Cyprus to Greece. It cannot make others give it either."

I believe that even if the Labour Party comes to power in Britain, it will make an appropriate assessment of the situation. Forcing us to walk the path desired by the Greek Cypriots is tantamount to crossing Canakkale".
