[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Feissel-Denktash meetingAccording to illegal Bayrak Radio (20.3.97), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said that "favourable steps can be taken on the Cyprus issue on condition that importance is attached to the interests of and the rights won by both sides". Denktash met with Gustave Feissel, UN Secretary General's assistant special envoy in Cyprus, within the framework of the indirect meetings under way to secure the resumption of the direct talks between the two communities.Denktash said the meeting was a continuation of the process launched by Feissel in a bid to secure the resumption of direct talks. Explaining that views were exchanged with Feissel, Denktash said he expects this process, which aims to lay the grounds for the direct talks, to continue for some time longer. Reiterating that the date of the meeting with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in Geneva has not been set yet, Denktash said the following in reply to a Greek Cypriot reporter's question on his opinion of the give-and-take method: "Discussions on the give-and-take method, which is part of the Set of Ideas, have been going on for a long time". Denktash added: "Grounds for launching the give-and-take method exist. Naturally, whoever seeks to take, must give as well. Favourable steps can be taken only if importance is attached to the interest of the rights won by both sides. We cannot be treated like a minority in Cyprus." Underlining that the Turkish Cypriot community is a founding partner of the Republic of Cyprus, Denktash said: "Our position must be secured within the framework of a bizonal republic and new partnership. Our job will be greatly facilitated if the undertakings are along these lines." Feissel, in turn, said that efforts were exerted to get the two leaders to hold direct meetings, which will definitely yield progress. Explaining that he seeks for the direct talks to yield results, Feissel added: "The sides can negotiate a solution if the direct meeting yields results." In reply to a question on whether he is hopeful that progress will be achieved, Feissel said: "The two communities have no alternative but to work in the best way possible to achieve a solution and exert every possible effort toward this. A solution will be in the interests of both communities." If you come out during the first or the second year, you succeed, otherwise you are stuck in. In Cyprus we are stuck. Cyprus has become extremely dear (expensive) for us. We have taken the most productive part of Cyprus, we have taken the best climatic area. We have taken the best constructed area. Today in our area, per capita income is 2-3 thousand dollars. They have reached to 12 thousand dollars. Why at that time, they have transferred Ecevit's illusion of "Village City Project". By the hands of Ziya Muezzinoglu we have destroyed the economy there. In such a way that through our Ziraat Bank (Agricultural Bank of Turkey) we were providing low-interest rate loans to them and they were bringing over this money to Turkey where interest rates were high thus making money without lifting a finger. We have transferred our inflation as well as industrial disputes there". This kind of statements have done great harm to you, to us and to Cyprus as well, you know this. You as a Cultural and nationalist organization should behave accordingly, you have to make yourself loved. Everybody including foreign diplomats should not come to me and telling me `Sir, these are terrorists', and I should not be forced to explain to them that `no these people have nothing to do with terrorism, we know them'. They have to take you as you are. We should be aware of all these and act accordingly".
