[01] Zorlu Tore says Van den Broek remarks about Denktash are "unacceptable"

He further claimed that the European countries are trying to admit the Turkish Cypriots to the EU in a federal framework in order to get Turkey out of Cyprus. "We will not fall in this trap", he said.

Yilmaz, in a joint press conference with Juppe and other EDU participants, said he had been asked, during the first session of the meeting which brings together 40 right-wing parties from 29 countries, about the Turkish views on NATO.

"I have said that the enlargement of the NATO and the EU should be taken as constituting a whole. As you know, this is the official position of Turkey", said Yilmaz, who earlier in the day had attacked the Turkish government on domestic issues and blamed the True Path Party-Welfare Party coalition for the present situation in Turkey.

For his part, Prime Minister Alain Juppe said that Turkey should continue on its "path toward Europe" and said that on this road Ankara would have the backing of France. "Nothing has changed in our attitude since we lent support to Turkey on the customs union", said Juppe.

However, EDU Chairman Alois Mock has pointed out that there are practical difficulties regarding the membership of Turkey in the European Union. Mock, the honorary chairman of the Austrian People's Party, said that some of the difficulties were economic and some were political, from human rights questions -- particularly the Kurdish question -- to the problem of Cyprus. He also pointed out the difficulties Turkey had with one EU member, Greece.

The so-called Council of Ministers has decided that the history of the TMT be written and published as a book. It has also decided to make a TV series. To this effect, a Supreme Council has been established headed by Rauf Denktash.

[05] Turkey's "legal war" against Cyprus' membership

She says that in this "war" Turkey makes reference to the then Greek Foreign Minister Averof's statement made on 12 February 1959 in reply to his British counterpart Lord Perth, regarding Article 8 of the Zurich Agreement.

Averof said, as mentioned in the minutes of that meeting: "With this article, our intention is to preclude any bilateral agreements between Cyprus and other countries - except the three guarantor countries (Turkey Britain and Greece).

And again our intention is to preclude both Greece and Turkey from establishing economic favourable positions over one another in Cyprus. For example it is aimed at precluding Greece's realisation of Economic Enosis with Cyprus".

Turkey is using this as an important trump card in her legal struggle against the EU, says CUMHURIYET correspondent. However, she adds, Sir David Hanney during his recent visit to Ankara told the journalists that Turkey's thesis can neither be legally valid nor politically applicable.
