[01] EGYPTIAN FOREIGN MINISTER ON CYPRUS

Turkish daily Turkiye (8/2/97) publishes an interview with Egyptian Foreign Minister 'Amr Mahmud Musa at the Egyptian Foreign Ministry in Cairo.

Asked whether Egypt thinks of recognizing the so-called independence of the pseudostate, Musa said:

"The problem between Turkey and Greece is a very old one. This should be solved not through war but by peaceful means. There are intensive efforts in that direction. We would recognize the result of an agreement. We would accept the final decisions to be reached by the sides on the Cyprus problem. At the moment multisided efforts are being exerted by the UN, EU, and others. We have to wait for their results. Right now recognition is not desired. We would of course recognize Cyprus if the conditions for Cyprus' independence fully develop."

[02] DENKTASH: BE READY TO SHOW THERE WILL BE NO SURRENDER

According to TRT (1300 hours, 11/2/97) Rauf Denktash has alleged that the countries that are closely interested in the solution of the Cyprus problem have still not realized that peace cannot be based on injustice or illegality. He said: "We must be prepared to carry out actions that will show de facto that we will not surrender to injustice and unfairness."

In a statement to illegal TAK (Turkish Cypriot News Agency), Denktash claimed that the United States, Britain, and the EU do not treat the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots equally.

Denktash said the Turkish Cypriots' expectations from third countries are as follows: "We will insist on equal treatment. We want the Greek Cypriot Administration to be told clearly that it is not the government of the Turkish Cypriots, and that our representatives are given an equal right to speak at all meetings where the Cyprus problem is discussed. We insist on that. We also insist on the lifting of the inhuman embargoes."

Denktash said that third countries are getting ready to exert pressure on the Turkish Cypriot side. "We must get ready to resist this pressure by relying on justice and the law, and to raise our national resistance to the highest level", he said. EF/MP
