[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash preparing letter to OIC on Alecos Michaelides' letterAccording to KIBRIS (28.11.96) Rauf Denktash is preparing a letter to the Islamic countries in response to the letter by Foreign Minister Michaelides. In a statement by the so-called presidency it is claimed that Mr. Michaelides' letter contains lies and that it was protested by the member countries of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC).The statement says: "Once again, we invite the diplomats, intellectuals, and authors from the Turkic republics and from the entire Islamic world to the TRNC". [02] Denktash is war-mongering againAccording to KIBRIS (28.11.96) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has warned that the Cyprus problem is heading towards a dangerous point or that "it has already arrived at that point".Denktash, who went to Istanbul for an eye check-up, gave a lecture to the students and the commanders at the War Academies Command in Istanbul. During the lecture Denktash made an in depth analysis of the Cyprus problem. Repeating his known views Denktash stressed that "the Turkish Cypriots will do all they can to prove that Cyprus is not a unitary state." Recalling that they have already declared that if Cyprus is accepted to become an EU member than the Turkish Cypriots will enter into integration with Turkey, Denktash alleged that President Clerides had said that in that event this will be a "casus belli". He went on and claimed: "They are getting ready. They have amassed a huge amount of arms. They are telling their youth and their people that the Turkish Cypriots are the enemies and that Turkey maintains an occupation army." Referring to Cyprus' EU membership efforts Denktash said: "Whether we want it or not they will carry Cyprus into the EU". He complained that some political parties in the occupied area have yet to understand the importance of the slogan "we cannot enter the EU without Turkey". Stressing that the 1960 Treaties not only recognize rights to the Turkish Cypriots but to Turkey as well, Denktash declared that Cyprus is an island close to the southern shores of Turkey and it is extremely important for Turkey's security. "If we hold a referendum today and ask the Turkish Cypriots whether we should enter the EU without Turkey, and if less then 80-85% reply `no we should not', then it means that I do not know my people". He then urged Turkey to make an in depth assessment of the situation. "Turkey should make a very deep evaluation. Together we have to make this assessment. I believe it is time to say the last word. We have to say, we cannot enter into the EU without Turkey, and if they insist on entering the EU then we have to say that there is no more room for intercommunal talks. We will not wear this shirt of a convict." Denktash concluded by saying that there will be no agreement without Turkey's guarantorship and right of intervention. (MY) EF/SK |
