[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Three Turkish armed forces' battleships arrive in occupied Kyrenia portAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (11:30 hours, 4.11.96) Taurus-2 96 military exercises, one of the planned exercises of the Turkish Armed Forces, has begun. The exercises will be conducted in the so-called international airspace and waters of the pseudostate and in the eastern Mediterranean.There will be firing during the exercises, whose aim is to develop coordination and cooperation between the Ground Forces, the Navy, and the Air Force. Meanwhile, Barbaros, Anit Kabir, and Yucetepe battleships, which will participate in the Taurus-2 96 military exercises, have arrived in the occupied Kyrenia port last Monday. The ships will be open to visitors. [02] Turkey's State Statistic Institute releases data of inflation rateAccording to TRT (14:00 hours, 4.11.96) it has been announced that the inflation rate for October was 6.5 percent. The annual inflation rate, in turn, stands at 79.6 percent in comparison to the same period last year.According to a statement issued by the Turkish State Statistics Institute, the consumer prices increased by 6.5 percent in October, while wholesale prices registered an increase of 5.5 percent. The consumer prices rose by 79.6 percent in October in comparison to the same period last year, while the wholesale prices registered an increase of 82.8 percent. The breakdown of the consumer prices show that an increase of 17.7 percent was registered mainly on the prices of clothes and shoes. An increase of 6.5 percent was registered in food, alcoholic beverages, and tobacco. [03] Local papers on TOROS-96 exerciseAll the local papers of today report about the Turkish military exercise TOROS-96 in which the occupation forces as well take part. The papers publish pictures taken from the exercise showing occupation troops in action, using tanks, artillary, anti-tank missiles and up-to-date weapon systems.They also publish pictures of Turkish navy ships that take part in the exercise, docked in the occupied area's ports. (MY) [04] Denktash meets Chief of Mission of UNHCR in CyprusKIBRIS (96.11.96) reports that Denktash had a meeting yesterday with the Chief of Mission at the Office of the UN High Commissioner Refugees in Cyprus (UNHCR) Machad Manning.Denktash was briefed on the work being done by the UNHCR. (MY) [05] Eight antique smugglers arrested in the occupied areaKIBRIS (6.11.96) reports that the so-called police in the occupied area during the whole day yesterday conducted an operation against antique smugglers in the occupied Karpass peninsula.KIBRIS says that around a hundred "policemen" took part in the operation during which eight people, two of them "policemen", were arrested. The paper says that during the operation icons and antiques were recovered worth 2.5 billion TL. KIBRIS, quoting unnamed sources, says that among those arrested, are people who are thought to have taken part in the St. Barnabas Monastery burglary. Moreover, YENIDUZEN (6.11.96) gives more detail regarding the icon smuggling. It says that as a result of the operation 15 icons were confiscated. Among the confiscated icons, are three icons painted on deer hide. YENIDUZEN reports that very few icons exist in the world that are painted on deer hide. They are very rare. (MY) [06] Pseudostate participation in conference in IslamabadKIBRIS (6.11.96) reports that the so-called Islamabad representative of the pseudostate, Erol Ertugan, has represented the pseudostate at the 5th Petrol, Diesel Oil and Petrochemical Products Group Conference within the framework of the ECO (Economic Cooperation Organization).Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Kyrgyzistan and Turkmenistan took part in the conference. (MY) [07] Asil Nadir not allowed to issue cheques in the occupied areaYENIDUZEN (5.11.96) reports that Turkish Cypriot businessman Asil Nadir, who jumped bail and escaped to the "safe heaven" of the occupied area to avoid British Justice, has been banned from issuing cheques in the occupied area because the cheques he issued from "Iktisat Bank" have been bounced and Nadir did not take action despite warnings by the bank. (MY)[08] Militaries interfere even in customs matters in the occupied areaYENIDUZEN (5.11.96) reports that when a businessman at the occupied Kyrenia Customs Office refused to produce tax exemption papers nor pay customs duty for a refrigerator compressor, to be used by the occupation army, argument started between the businessman and the so-called customs officials. Following this argument the businessman called in a sergeant-major who, in turn, brought in a squad of armed troops and arrested the so-called customs officers, dragged and hauled them into a military car and kept them in custody for hours.Following the incident, the officers at the so-called Kyrenia Customs Office have decided to go on a solidarity strike. YENIDUZEN further reports that the sergeant-major warned the correspondents of YENIDUZEN and KIBRIS, who arrived to cover the event, not to take pictures nor to report it, otherwise, he said, "we know what to do". YENIDUZEN also reports than the photographer of KIBRIS had a problem with the sergeant-major because he insisted on taking pictures despite the latter's warnings. The paper adds that the customs officials continue to be under "police" custody after they were released from the military arrest. (MY) |
