[05] Eight antique smugglers arrested in the occupied area

KIBRIS (6.11.96) reports that the so-called police in the occupied area during the whole day yesterday conducted an operation against antique smugglers in the occupied Karpass peninsula.

KIBRIS says that around a hundred "policemen" took part in the operation during which eight people, two of them "policemen", were arrested.

The paper says that during the operation icons and antiques were recovered worth 2.5 billion TL.

KIBRIS, quoting unnamed sources, says that among those arrested, are people who are thought to have taken part in the St. Barnabas Monastery burglary.

Moreover, YENIDUZEN (6.11.96) gives more detail regarding the icon smuggling. It says that as a result of the operation 15 icons were confiscated. Among the confiscated icons, are three icons painted on deer hide.

[08] Militaries interfere even in customs matters in the occupied area

YENIDUZEN (5.11.96) reports that when a businessman at the occupied Kyrenia Customs Office refused to produce tax exemption papers nor pay customs duty for a refrigerator compressor, to be used by the occupation army, argument started between the businessman and the so-called customs officials. Following this argument the businessman called in a sergeant-major who, in turn, brought in a squad of armed troops and arrested the so-called customs officers, dragged and hauled them into a military car and kept them in custody for hours.

Following the incident, the officers at the so-called Kyrenia Customs Office have decided to go on a solidarity strike.

YENIDUZEN further reports that the sergeant-major warned the correspondents of YENIDUZEN and KIBRIS, who arrived to cover the event, not to take pictures nor to report it, otherwise, he said, "we know what to do".

YENIDUZEN also reports than the photographer of KIBRIS had a problem with the sergeant-major because he insisted on taking pictures despite the latter's warnings.

The paper adds that the customs officials continue to be under "police" custody after they were released from the military arrest. (MY)
