[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Turkish Cypriots criticize UNAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (5:00 hours, 24.10.96) "Prime Minister" Dervis Eroglu issued a statement on the occasion of United Nations Day, saying that the organization has been contributing to peaceful and humanitarian objectives and trying to act in line with the principles of its foundation for the past 51 years. However, Eroglu said, "the Turkish Cypriots regret the fact that the United Nations -- which has undersigned major humanitarian accomplishments --has failed to make the desired and expected effort in connection with the Cyprus problem."Eroglu claimed: "Today, we regrettably see that the United Nations continues to remain passive before the Greek Cypriot attacks and activities launched against the Turkish Cypriots." He also claimed that the United Nations loses its credibility and impartiality by insisting on viewing the Greek Cypriots as the sole representatives of the Cyprus Republic despite everything that has happened. He stated that the developments indicate that a solution cannot be reached by imposing formulas and unilateral resolutions on the Turkish Cypriots. [02] Denktash, Eroglu criticize Russian Duma Resolution on CyprusAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (15:30 hours, 24.10.96) Rauf Denktash has claimed that the pro Greek Cypriot resolutions and proposals of the Russian Duma will only exacerbate the lack of conciliation on the island.Replying to a question by illegal BRT (Bayrak Radio and Television) on the recent pro Greek Cypriot Duma resolution, Denktash claimed that Russia has, anyway, lost its impartiality by selling all sorts of heavy weaponry to the Greek Cypriots. Denktash said: "Selling arms to the Greek Cypriots, on the one hand, and taking pro Greek Cypriot resolutions, on the other, will only exacerbate the lack of conciliation in Cyprus. Let Russia not cast a shadow over Cyprus. That is all we want." The Duma resolution suggested that in addition to the stationing of international security forces, the island be demilitarized. "Prime Minister" Dervis Eroglu criticized the Duma resolution, also alleging that with this resolution, Russia, which is a permanent UN Security Council member, "has once again cast a shadow over its impartiality". In a written statement on the issue, Eroglu claimed that Russia has for years aimed at stationing an international force in which it will have a say as well. [03] DYP Deputy Goksoy resigns from partyAccording to TRT (15:00 hours, 24.10.96) Ayseli Goksoy, Manisa deputy for the True Path Party (DYP), has resigned from her party. In a news conference she held at the parliament, Goksoy said that she displayed her stand against the government as a deputy, who believed in the republic and democracy in line with Ataturk's principles.With Goksoy's resignation, the number of DYP seats at the Assembly decreased to 119. The number of independent deputies increased to 12. [04] Denktash says President Clerides' better will be answered backAccording to KIBRIS (25.10.96) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, commenting on President Clerides' written answer, has said that it referred mainly to the recent killing. "They have prepared a propaganda document. It will be answered", claimed Denktash."It is a letter that should be answered. It says that I have not even expressed my regret regarding the killings. (MY) [05] Michel Barnier on the Cyprus problem, Turkey threatens to use veto on NATO enlargementGUNERI Civaoglu writing in MILLIYET (24.10.96) under his column "Mirrors" refers to the dinner given by Turkish Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller, in honour of the visiting French Minister Responsible for European Affairs Michel Barnier. He writes:During the dinner when two Islamist Prosperity Party (RP) deputies told Barnier "we want to enter the European Union", Barnier asked them "why" immediately. Prof. Mumtaz Soysal, Republican People's Party deputy and former Turkish Foreign Minister, intervened and answered: "Turkey considered it useful and for this reason it applied. To this the Motherland Party deputy gave a sharp answer that could cut the ice: "So you will turn Greece's mortgage into a European Union policy. If that is the case then Turkey will use its veto for the enlargement of NATO with Poland, Romania and the Czech Republic. If Greece's veto against us regarding the EU is not lifted then Turkey's veto on NATO's enlargement will continue". (MY) |
