[01] Denktash on military dialogue, other issues

According to illegal Bayrak radio (15:30 hours, 22.10.96) Rauf Denktash has claimed that he was the first one to propose indirect contacts with the Greek Cypriot side regarding a military dialogue. He alleged that Cyprus is not a unitary Greek Cypriot Republic and it is wrong for the EU to regard Cyprus as a unitary Greek Cypriot Republic. "There cannot be a reconciliation in Cyprus unless these erroneous views are rectified," he declared. Denktash replied to questions on various issues by illegal TAK (Turkish Cypriot News Agency).

Denktash was asked: The Greek Cypriot leadership has reportedly agreed to hold indirect contacts with regard to a military dialogue. The Greek Cypriot press says that the Turkish Cypriot response on this subject is unknown. Denktash replied claiming: "I was the one who proposed the indirect talks from the onset. The entire Greek Cypriot side continued to resist. Eventually, this is what I proposed to Clerides in writing".

Commenting on the gold cross medal awarded to President Clerides by the non-commissioned officers federation, Denktash said that this is normal, because, as he put it, "Clerides has served the advocates of pan-Hellenism who have been struggling to devour Cyprus for years". Denktash charged that President Clerides "is a tool in the hands of the Church, of EOKA-B (National Organization of Cypriot Fighters), of Kyprianou and of Greece."

Referring to the recent events in Cyprus, Denktash claimed that by closing the "border", the Greek Cypriots tried to force the Turkish Cypriot side to adopt a countermeasure, which would prompt them to engage in false propaganda.

Commenting on the Russian view expressed during meetings in Europe that there is no "border" in Cyprus, only a cease-fire line, Denktash claimed that the "borders" in Cyprus were delineated as a result of the Greek Cypriots "ousting the Turkish Cypriots from the government through the use of force". He outrougwesly claimed: "The line along which we chased the occupying Greek forces and the Grivas forces in 1974, together with guarantor Turkey, constitutes our border. If we reach a conciliation, border adjustments can be introduced. It is meaningless for others to declare that there are no borders". "Border trespassers were punished by the courts", he said and added asserting that there are "borders" in Cyprus and there is a separate "state and government" on the other side.

[02] Emigration escalates in the occupied area

YENIDUZEN (23.10.96) reports under the banner headline "The emigration wound" and says that emigration forms for Canada are being distributed in occupied Nicosia at grocery shops and markets.

YENIDUZEN adds that the demand for the forms is so high that, when they run out, photocopies of them are being distributed.

YENIDUZEN reports that Manitoba in Canada, this year will take in tens of thousands immigrants, mainly qualified technicians, teachers, doctors etc.

It says, "while the Turkish Cypriots are abandoning their country, they try to keep the people inactive using the slogan 'the one who comes in is a Turk, and the one who emigrates is a Turk'."

"The Turkish Cypriot identity and personality in north Cyprus is fading away gradually, and certain circles try to turn a blind eye to this fact. And those who advocate the Turkish Cypriot identity and peace are being branded as traitors.

YENIDUZEN concludes by saying that now Turkish Cypriot teachers are in demand in Turkey's private education section, which is another way of brain drain. (MY)

[03] New Turkish envoy arrives in the occupied area

KIBRIS (23.10.96) reports that Turkey's new envoy to the occupied area, Ertugrul Apakan, will be arriving in the occupied area tomorrow.

He will replace Aydan Karahan who has been called back to Ankara. (MY)
