[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] CHANGING OF THE DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTER OF THE OCCUPIED AREA CONTINUES: SIX THOUSAND MORE RECEIVE "CITIZENSHIP"ORTAM (17.10.96) reports that six thousand more Turks have been given illegal citizenship by the occupation regime, in the last two and half years.Among the people who acquired "citizenship" are Turkish deputies Hayri Kozakcioglu, Ismail Kore Sukru Erdem, Ismail Hakki Amasyali, Bekir Sami Dace and Former Turkish Chief of Staff General Karadayi. ORTAM reports that in 1994, 2281 people were given the so- called citizenship, and in 1995 3225 people. The paper adds that in the first six months of this year 500 Turks were given illegal citizenship. (MY) [02] SHIP-CREW SAVED BY THE SO-CALLED COAST GUARDAccording to KIBRIS (18.10.96) the Hondurian registered ship Noura-s, plying between Ukraine and the Port of Tartus, Syria, went down 35 miles off the coast of Cape Andreas.The five-member crew has been picked up by the so-called Coast Guard of the occupied area. The paper says that of the five-member crew, there are Lebanese, one Sudanese and the other one is a Tanzanian national. The ship was carrying a cargo of 400 tons of iron from Ukraine to Tartus. KIBRIS claims that the captain of the ship refused the Cyprus government's offer to save them by sending a helicopter to the area. Once the necessary contacts are made the crew will be sent back to their respective countries. (MY) |
