Attending the meeting was Taner Etkin, "foreign affairs and defense minister", Necati Munir Ertekun, "coordinating ambassador and presidential special adviser for political affairs", and British High Commissioner David Madden.Speaking to the press after the meeting, which lasted approximately one hour, Hannay expressed the hope that the two leaders will meet face to face in 1997. "We are now exerting efforts to establish trust between the sides and learn their outlook on the issues with a view to attaining a lasting solution", Hannay explained. He added that he is trying to formulate an agenda according to which the two leaders can meet and hold talks. In his brief statement after the meeting, Denktash declared that he does not find it appropriate to make a long statement at a time when such initiatives are under way. [03] Turkish Cypriots repeat claims of "attacks" by the Greek CypriotsAccording to illegal Bayrak Radio (1530 hours, 15/10/96) the so-called Foreign Affairs and Defense Ministry of the pseudostate has claimed that the elimination of the tension on the island depends upon the stand to be adopted by the Greek Cypriot side. The "Minisry" issued a written statement saying that the Turkish Cypriot side, despite all the "attacks", as it calls them, it has been subjected to in recent months, is ready to sit at the negotiations table with goodwill in a bid to solve the Cyprus problem. The statement claims that the Cyprus Government is fully responsible for these "attacks" and that those who participate in such acts should bear the consequences. [04] Denktash stresses bizonality, calls for negotiationsAccording to illegal Bayrak Radio (1530 hours, 15/10/96) Rauf Denktash has said that the principle of bizonality cannot be punctured in Cyprus. He called on the Greek Cypriots "not to violate the borders of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)" and to come to the negotiating table.Replying to questions by an illegal TAK (Turkish Cypriot news Agency) reporter on the recent developments, Denktash claimed that the Cyprus Government and Greece are using the Akheritou incident, in which a Greek Cypriot was shot dead by turkish troops, as a propaganda issue against Turkey. "The person who shot him was a Turkish Cypriot soldier whose duty is to protect the military zone with his life" Denktash claimed. Speaking of "a goal to upset the Turkish-Greek balance on the island in favour of Greece and to claim ownership of Cyprus", Denktash added: "our duty is to prevent this and to preserve the balance no matter what the cost". Denktash also spoke of "the need for time for the two communities to come together and become friends". Claiming that the Greek Cypriots will need money to pay compensation to the Turkish Cypriots for the years 1963 and 1974, Denktash concluded: "You can do whatever you want. The nation is ours as much as it is yours. We will defend our nation. We will not be a protected minority as desired and envisaged by (Greek Cypriot leader) Clerides. We will not be under Greek Cypriot hegemony in Cyprus. We will not let Greece appropriate Cyprus".
