[01] Minister Tayan on "Provocative" Greek attitude

According to Ankara radio (11.9.96) National Defense Minister Turhan Tayan has said that it has been sadly observed that Greece has resumed its hostile attitude and behaviour against Turkey. He recalled that this provocative Greek attitude caused a soldier to be martyred and another to be injured in the occupied area. He stated that the fact that Turkey is patiently observing the developments should not be interpreted as a sign of weakness and called on his Greek counterpart to act in a similar manner. Tayan said: "I would like to point out that I do not approve of his visit to the Greek Cypriot side to make provocative statements and that he should be more careful, as befits a responsible statesman. I would also like to point out the necessity of adopting a peaceful and not a hostile attitude."

[02] Denktash: "Greek Cypriots killed Adali"

According to KIBRIS (12.9.96) the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, paid a courtesy call to the commander of the 28th Division of the Turkish occupation force in Cyprus Major General Aydin Sen at his headquarters in occupied Assia.

Speaking to reporters prior to the meeting, Denktash declared that his conviction that it is the Greek Cypriots who assassinated Kutlu Adali is getting firmer. He alleged: "Why? Because Mrs. Paley who is acting as advocate on behalf of the Greek Cypriots, all of a sudden had declared at the Human Rights Court, something that nobody knows, something none of us knew. What did she said? She said: `Kutlu Adali was my witness, they killed my witness'. Kutlu Adali was her witness against Turkey; and those who knew this killed him. But no one knew this. It was the Greek Cypriots who knew this. How could this happen, how could this be done?"

He was also critical of Greek Cypriot press reports regarding the killing of the Turkish soldier at Akheritou. Denktash said: "To these lies even a fool laughs at. However all these lies and slanders show one thing; that is, in no way one could rely on them".

Denktash further alleged that bombs thrown at the Republican Turkish Party, RTP offices, crimes committed where the perpetrators remain at large, Kutlu Adali's assassination, incidents at the buffer zone and lies regarding the recent killing, were committed by the Greek Cypriots with a view to cause internal fighting among the Turkish Cypriots. He claimed that the Greeks resorted to the same tactics in Crete to get rid of the Turks from Crete.

He said that they consider the attempt to disassociate Cyprus from Turkey and Turkey's rights on Cyprus, through the EU an act of enmity. (MY)

    [03] Williams meets Muftuzade

According to KIBRIS (12.9.96) US State Department Special Cyprus Coordinator, James Williams had a meeting in London with the so-called London representative of the pseudostate Hakki Kuftuzade.

The paper does not specify the venue of the meeting. (MY)

[04] Denktash on the disarming issue

According to illegal Bayrak radio (12:00 hours, 12.9.96) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has said that he had received a letter from President Clerides, in which he was proposing him to discuss the disarming issue.

Denktash informed that he is ready to discuss the disarming issue on the condition that it will not water down the 1960 Guarantee Treaty.

Denktash also said that he will reply to his letter. (MY)

[05] New Turkish envoy to the occupied area

Deputy Head of the Cyprus Greece Desk at the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Ertugrul Apakan has been appointed as the new Turkish envoy to the occupied area.

He will replace Aydan Karahan. (MY)
