[02] Greek and Greek Cypriot youth who crossed by mistake in to occupied area "sentenced" for three days imprisonmentAccording to illegal Bayrak Radio (13/8/96) two people one of them a Greek Cypriot and the other a Greek national, who lost their bearing and entered the occupied area near occupied Fama- gusta were sentenced to three days in prison by a so called mili- tary tribunal today. Kyriacos Charidhimou and Christos Zakhari- poulos, the Greek national, who were abducted by the occupation forces yesterday, were brought before so called military tribunal this morning. The so called court decided to arrest them for three days. The two drove into the forbidden "military zone" near the two and a half mile barricade yesterday morning.[03] ECEVIT: "TURKISH ARMY ONLY GUARANTEE FOR CYPRIOT PEACE"According to BIRLIK (13/8/96), Democratic Left Party, DSP leader Bulent Ecevit has alleged that the only guarantee for peace in Cyprus is the continued presence of the Turkish military force on the island. At a news conference in the Turkish Grand National Assembly Ece- vit said that if the Turkish military presence is withdrawn from the island, there might be serious chaos in Cyprus, even the danger of genocide as experienced by the Bosnians. He charged that the Greek Orthodox Church, the Greek and Greek Cypriot press, and certain statesmen were responsible for the discuption of peace in Cyprus for the first time in 22 years. Ecevit also charged that the last minute statements made by President Cler- ides were only meant to create the impression that he was fulfil- ling his duty. "As far as I am concerned, the really responsible party is the EU. As you know, the EU decided to admit Cyprus as a full member by considering the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus nonexist- ent, and by ignoring Turkey's opposition and warnings to this stand. This gave great daring to the Greek Cypriots". The DSP leader claimed that the Greek Cypriots carried out their act by relying on the support of the EU. He went on to say that the acts carried out by the Greek Cypriots will bring about a more severe break than the existing one between the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities, that a dialogue will become even more difficult, that there will be a tension on the buffer zone between the two communities, and that the option for a federal solution will be eliminated. Ecevit stressed that Turkey must mount a vigourous information campaign at the EU and the United States regarding the Turkish stand on the Cyprus issue. [04] ALI YALCIN IS NEW OCCUPATION FORCES COMMANDERAccording to YENIDUZEN (14/8/96) Lieutenant-General Ali Yalcin has been appointed as the new commander of the Turkish Occupation Forces in Cyprus and Major-General Ali Zen has been appointed as the Commander of the 28th Motorized Infant Division. KIBRIS says that Lieutenant-General Ali Yalcin had served six years ago as the Commander of the so-called security Forces in the occupied area. The paper adds that Lieutenant General Hasan Karaday the current commander of the Turkish Occupation Forces will hand over his duties to Lieutenant General Ali Yalcin on 17/8/96 and on 16 August 1996 Major General Mehmet Karli will hand over his duties to Major-General Ali Zen. Karaday and Karli will leave the occupied area on 18 August 1996. [05] THREATS AGAINST YENIDUZENYENIDUZEN (14/8/1996) reports that because of the objective reflection of the last Sunday events that took place in SOPAZ area, Akhna and Derinia by the newspaper, YENIDUZEN has started getting threats from certain groups through telephone.YENI DUZEN reports: "Our Paper's management in the face of these threats has informed the Police General Directorate and demanded necessary measures to be taken. However, one thing should not be forgotten YENIDUZEN, taking into consideration our community's local and international interests will continue to report the events and the developments in a true and objective manner to the public opinion". [06] RED ALARM IN CYPRUSYENI YUZYIL (13/8/1996) reports under the banner headlines "Red Alarm: the tension going on for the last week in Cyprus has reached the other day with the bloody events that ended by the death of a person on the green line near Dherina. The Greek Cypriot youth caught by the Turkish demonstrators in the Buffer Zone, had died by the blows he had received on his head. From the greek side 17 people, of whom four were seriously wounded, and from the turkish side 12 people, among them five policemen, were wounded. When the Greek Cypriots refused to give up their action, leave of absence of the Turkish security forces were cancelled and they were put on red alert footing. HUNTING IS ALLOWED Turkish villagers along the border where hunting is forbidden, when they heard that the Turkish commander said that on Sunday hunting is allowed, if they want to, they can hunt despite the ongoing hunting ban, took up their shotguns and went on "hunting" along the border. People were also told that if they caught a Greek Motorcyclist they can lay hand on the motorcycle. Thus they started waiting for the motorcyclists. Meanwhile 120 from the "Idealists group had started up from Turkey to go to the TRNC. The tense atmosphere was released around 11 o' clock when news came from the south that President Clerides has succeeded to convince the chairman of the Cyprus Motorcyclists Federation, Hadjicostas, to cancel the ride. From this official cancellation, the events did not calm down. As it was expected the Greek Cypriot protesters refused to listen to the decision to cancel the ride and started stoning the Turkish side in Dherinia. Meanwhile the Idealists who started gathering near the Turkish Security region with their Grey Wolf emblems and tri-crescent flags entered into the military security area and wanted to go to the green line. At the beginning they were precluded, but then this angry mob were set free to go. An official who came near the demonstra- tors said to them "Comrades do not go anywhere; when need be we will use you". People, wave after wave, were going to the "front". Everywhere there were turkish and tri-crescent flags. In their hand they were holding wooden clubs, on their belts diver's and hunter's knives, iron bars, water pipes, large knives, long carving knives, catapults stones and clubs with nails on them. They were singing the national anthem and shouting slogans. The mob became uncontrolled, in the meantime some Greek Cypriots entered the Buffer Zone and started shouting and doing unbecoming gestures to the Turks. Meanwhile fanatics from both sides passed the barbed wires and entered into the Buffer Zone. In order to catch these Greeks the Turks entered the Buffer Zone too. A Greek Cypriot running away was trapped by the barbed wire and was unable to escape and he was beaten by iron bars. Tasos Isaac (24) who received heavy blows on his head was fatally injured and died in hospital. And then the Turks launched another attack shouting "Allah Allah" (Tr note: God,God). The UN soldiers tried to stop the events in a nice manner, but this was no use. They were outnumbered. Towards the evening when the news reached that the Greek Cypriot motorcyclists dispersed and the events ended Turkish demonstra- tors took the road to their homes with their guns in their hands". The paper publishes a sketch showing how the Greek Cypriot was murdered by the Turkish mob. MY |
